A slip control device for a vehicle provided with an internal combustion engine, wherein an engine output torque is controlled independently of a depression of the accelerator pedal so that slip at the driving wheels of the vehicle is controlled. A stand-by means is provided and operates, upon a prediction of an occurrence of slip at the vehicle wheels, to close the throttle valve to a stand-by degree of opening thereof before the occurrence of the slip. The stand-by degree of opening of the throttle valve is controlled in accordance with an engine torque of the engine when the occurrence of slip is predicted. Thus the occurrence of slip is effectively prevented and a good acceleration performance obtained.

The control device includes a target-speed determining device for determining a target speed of the drive wheel based on a detected speed of the vehicle and the detected speed of the drive wheel. The control device further includes an uphill-road determining device for determining whether the vehicle is on an uphill road, and a low-speed detecting device for detecting that a detected running speed of the vehicle is lower than a predetermined threshold value. If the vehicle is on an uphill road and the vehicle speed is lower than the threshold value, the target speed determining device is operated in an uphill-road mode such that the determined target speed is lower than that determined in a flat-road mode.

An automotive vehicle driven wheel slippage control device is arranged such that the rotational speed of a driven vehicle wheel is determined. The presence of a condition of acceleration slippage is determined by utilizing as a parameter the rotational speed of the driven wheel. The value of a parameter representing the condition of the road surface on which the vehicle is being operated is determined. A braking device provided to the driven wheel is operated and controlled to set braking conditions for the driven wheel when acceleration slippage is determined, the braking conditions being varied according to the current value of the parameter representing road surface condition. The intensity of braking for the driven wheel may be varied, or, alternatively, the time period of braking therefor may be varied. Optionally, the parameter representing road surface condition may be determined from a value representing torque on the driven wheel and a value representing rotational acceleration thereof.
