Gas sensor element

A spark plugincludes a cylindrical housing, a cylindrical insulator, a center electrode, a terminal bracket, a ground electrode, and a resistor. The insulator is held on the inside of the housing. The center electrodeis held on the inside of the insulator, with a tip end being projected therefrom. The terminal bracket is held on the inside of the insulator, with a base end part and being projected therefrom. The ground electrode forms a spark discharge gap G between itself and the center electrode. The resistor contains carbon and is disposed on the inside of the insulator so as to be located between the center electrodeand the terminal bracket. In an axial direction X of the spark plug, the resistor has a higher carbon content in a first region positioned on a tip side, compared to a second region positioned on a base end side.

An alumina sintered body has a main phase made of alumina crystals, a first dispersed phase made of MgAlOdispersed in the main phase, and a second dispersed phase made of SiOand/or CaO dispersed in the main phase. A content ratio of the main phase is within a range from not less than 98% to less than 98%. The alumina sintered body satisfies a relationship of 100&#xd7;I/I&#x2267;5.5%, where Iindicates a maximum peak height intensity derived from alumina, and Iindicates a maximum peak height intensity derived from MgAlOin a X-ray diffraction of the alumina sintered body. An area ratio of the second dispersed phase on a surface of the alumina sintered body is not more than 15.2%. A spark plug has a central electrode, a ground electrode and an insulator made of the alumina sintered body having the specific features previously described.

An alumina sintered body comprises alumina crystals as a main phase and a grain boundary phase made up of crystalline YSiOand amorphous SiOat grain boundaries of the alumina crystals wherein when the alumina sintered body is taken as 100 wt %, the high melting phase is present in the range of from 0.1 wt % to 15 wt %. There is also provided a method for preparing the alumina sintered body, which method comprising a first mixing step Pof mixing, at least, a yttria powder having an average particle size of 60 to 100 nm and a silica powder having a given average particle size to provide a mixed slurry and a second mixing step of further mixing an alumina powder having an average particle size of 0.5 to 1.0 &#x3bc;m in the mixed slurry.

Alumina sintered body and method for manufacturing same, and spark plug comprising the alumina sintered body as an insulator

A spark plug includes a metallic housing, an insulator fixed in the metallic housing, a center electrode fixed in the insulator, a ground electrode opposed to the center electrode via a spark discharge gap, and a protective coat formed on the surfaces of a metallic housing and a gasket. The protective coat includes a galvanized film formed on the surfaces of the metallic housing and the gasket and a chromate film successively laminated on the galvanized film. The chromate film is hexavalent chromium-free and contains trivalent chromium as a major component. The chromate film has a film thickness not smaller than 0.05 &#x3bc;m and not greater than 0.18 &#x3bc;m, and the chromate film contains a metallic component which is robust against oxidation compared with zinc. Furthermore, the chromate film has a film hardness equal to or less than 1 GPa in the temperature range from a room temperature to 180&#xb0; C.

Spark plug

An internal combustion engine ignition device has a resin layer in a clearance between an insulator and a winding contained in the insulator. The ignition device has a cylindrical insulator and a resin layer. The insulator has an opening portion at one end and a bottom portion at the other end. The insulator contains one of a primary winding and a secondary winding. The resin layer is formed by charging a resin in the clearance between the insulator and one of the windings. The diameter of the inner periphery of the insulator gradually increases from the opening portion to the bottom portion. When the resin layer shrinks from the opening portion toward the bottom portion of the insulator, the resin layer can shrink without getting snagged on the inner periphery of the insulator.

Ignition device for internal combustion engine

In a spark plug for an internal combustion engine, an insulator is vided at its inside with a center electrode. A tubular housing is disposed to surround an outer periphery of the insulator. An annular space portion is provided between the housing and the outer periphery of the insulator. A powder filling is filled in the annular space portion so as to be formed as a filled portion therein. The powder filling is composed of a plurality of filling grains. 80 weight percent and over of the filling grains, before the powder filling is filled in the annular space, have a range from 100 to 1000 &#x3bc;m in grain diameter, respectively.

In an ignition device for an internal combustion engine which is mounted in a cylinder head in a state where a spark plug and an ignition coil are integrated with each other, the plug side tube section is made of ceramics and internally accommodates a center electrode and the coil side tube section is made of ceramics, with one of a primary winding and a secondary winding being wound around the coil side tube section. The plug side tube section and the coil side tube section are constructed as separate bodies and then combined with each other. This shortens the overall lengths of both the tube sections, thus preventing the occurrence of cracks or bends at calcining and improving the dimension accuracy after the calcining.

Ignition device for internal combustion engine and a manufacturing method therefor

A lead-free glaze that can be fired at a low temperature, a spark plug for which it is used, and a spark plug production method are provided. The lead-free glaze is for coating onto ceramic materials. This lead-free glaze contains 16-49 wt % of SiO , 15-35 wt % of B O , 0-10 wt % of Al O and 0-10 wt % of ZnO. A spark plug is provided that comprises coating the lead-free glaze onto the surface of an insulator and firing.

A low temperature sintering ceramic material, having low temperature sinterability and excellent thermal conductivity, is particularly suitable for use in making an IC substrate of a ceramic printed plate board. This low temperature sintering ceramic material has two composition types. One is a binary composition type ceramic material consisting essentially of MgO and B.sub.2 O.sub.3, and the other is a ternary composition type ceramic material composed of principal components consisting of MgO and B.sub.2 O.sub.3 and assisting components consisting of one or more selected from Li.sub.2 O, Na.sub.2 O, K.sub.2 O, a fluoride of an alkali metal and a fluoride of an alkaline earth metal. After sintering, MgO and B.sub.2 O.sub.3 are respectively contained at 50 to 90 mol% and 10 to 50 mol% on 100 mol% of the total amount of MgO and B.sub.2 O.sub.3.

A ceramic heater body is formed in a plate shape, and has electrode attaching portions at both ends of the heater body. A plurality of openings are formed in the electrode attaching portion, and a metallized layer is formed on the inner peripheral surface of each of the openings. Electrodes having a plurality of wires are connected to the electrode attaching portions, for supplying power to the heater body. The metal wires are inserted into the openings formed having the metallized layers on the inner peripheral surfaces, and are secured by brazing to the metallized layers. The diameter of the metal wire is set to 0.5 to 3 mm, and the metal wires are buried in the openings, at a depth of 1 to 5 mm.

A metal composition usable as a brazing material for bonding a metal to a non-oxide ceramic. An exhaust-gas purifying apparatus according to the present invention comprises an exhaust-gas filter for trapping particulates in exhaust gas from an engine, and a heating device located on the upper-course side of the filter, with respect to the flowing direction of the exhaust gas, the heating device including one or more conductive-ceramic heater elements, capable of heating and burning the particulates caught by the filter, and a heater case for holding the heater elements in position, so that the caught particulates are heated and burned by the heater elements when the flow resistance of the exhaust gas, flowing through the filter, is increased by the caught particulates, whereby the flow resistance is reduced. The heater element includes a fixed electrode portion, immovably fixed to the heater case, and a slidable electrode portion held slidably. An electrode member, fixed to the heater case, is brazed to the fixed electrode portion, and the heater element is bonded to the electrode member, so as to be clamped from both sides by solidified molten solder. The slidable electrode portion is supported by the heater case, for sliding motion in the direction of thermal deformation, so that the working life of the heater element is prolonged.

Purifying apparatus of a particulate trap-type for collecting

A ceramic heater for regenerating a fine particle collecting filter which is exposed to exhaust gases at elevated temperatures. This ceramic heater comprises two electrode potions, a heat generation portion connected to the two electrode portions and a holding projection portion of a ceramic heater connected to the side of the heat generating portion. The two electrode portions, the heat generating portion and the holding projection portion are formed integrally.

The ceramic heater of the present invention is used for regenerating a fine particle collecting filter which is exposed to exhaust gases at elevated temperatures. In this ceramic heater, which is capable of being cantilevered, two electrode portions are provided on a single straight or curved line and heat generating portion is positioned on one side of said line. The heat generating portion comprises a ring-like portion and two leg portions integrally connected to the ring-like portion at two connecting portions which approximately bisect the ring-like portion. The two electrode portions are provided at fore ends of the leg portions respectively, and the ring-like portion and the two electrode portions conjointly form a triangle.
