An apparatus and method for extracting a desired portion of an image represented by compressed data. The compressed data is expanded in an expanding circuit and outputted therefrom in accordance with clock pulses. Such clock pulses, or data transfers or addresses associated therewith, are counted so as to determine the position of the data. The determined position of the data is compared to the desired portion so as to determine whether the data is within the desired portion. If the data is determined to be within the desired portion, such data is stored in an image memory. As a result, such extraction may be performed without utilizing an additional memory for temporarily storing the expanded data.

A fader device for processing picture data supplied from outside, such as from a video tape recorder or a camera, with fade-in or fade-out processing with a desired color. For fade-in, a subtractor subtracts the color picture data supplied from a designated color picture data forming unit from picture data supplied from outside and transmits the resulting difference data to a multiplier, which then multiplies picture data from the subtractor with a gradually increasing coefficient supplied from the gain control unit and routes the result of multiplication to an adder. The adder adds picture data supplied from the multiplier to the color picture data supplied from the designated color picture data forming unit and routes the resulting addition signal to a monitor unit. For fade-out, the subtractor subtracts the color picture data supplied from the designated color picture data forming unit from data supplied from outside and routes the resulting difference signal to the multiplier. The multiplier multiplies picture data from the subtractor with a gradually decreasing coefficient supplied from the gain control unit and routes the result of multiplication to an adder. The adder adds picture data supplied from the multiplier to the color picture data supplied from the designated color picture data forming unit and routes the resulting addition signal to a monitor unit.

A digital electronic still camera wherein additional information such as an operation characteristic of the camera can be recorded into and reproduced from a removable record medium. A pickup image signal is picked up by a CCD image sensor and converted into a digital signal by an analog to digital converter. The digital signal is temporarily stored into a digital memory and written onto a removable optical disk apparatus. The digital electronic still camera further comprises an additional information recording and reproducing circuit for recording and reproducing additional information such as an operation characteristic of the camera onto or from the optical disk apparatus.

In a magnetic tape recording system having a single master tape player and a plurality of slave recording devices each including at least one rotary magnetic head for repeatedly scanning a respective magnetic recording tape, and each receiving, from the single master tape player, a signal to be recorded along with an external sync or reference signal; each of the slave recording devices is provided with a respective time base adjusting memory in which the signal to be recorded is written in synchronism .with the external reference signal, and from which the signal to be recorded is read-out in synchronism with a reference pulse generated in timed relation to a predetermined rotational position of the respective rotary magnetic head. Further, a drum servo is provided in each of the slave recording devices for controlling the rotation of the respective rotary magnetic head in accordance with the relation of the respective reference pulse in respect to the external reference signal from the single master player, whereby the several slave recording devices are operated in substantial synchronism with each other and alignment errors in the patterns of slant record tracks on the several magnetic tapes can be prevented.
