A one-component developer comprising an external additive, and toner particles containing a binder resin and a colorant, wherein the external additive contains a titanium compound obtained by the reaction of TiO(OH).sub.2 and a silane compound, and an image forming method using the one-component developer are disclosed. The one-component developer and the image forming method provide excellent flow and a narrow charge distribution, can reduce fluctuation of the charge property due to the environmental change, and can thus form a high-quality image without fogging and the damage to a latent image retainer by filming can be prevented.

One-component developer

The present invention provides a mono-component developer comprising toner particles containing a binding resin, a colorant and an additive and a method of forming images by use thereof. In the present invention said additive is preferably a titanium compound prepared by through the reaction between TiO(OH).sub.2 and a silane compound or through the reaction between TiO(OH).sub.2 and a silicone oil. The specific gravity of the said titanium compound is in the range of 2.8 to 3.6. The average particle diameter thereof is in the range of 10 to 70 nm. The said toner particle is preferably a non-magnetic particle. By making use of the mono-component developer and the method for forming an image using it, charging of the toner, and carriage of the toner can be stabilized over a long period of time, and stable image formation can be obtained.

A non-magnetic one-component developer comprising a binder resin, a colorant and a charge controlling agent, the binder resin being a polyester resin which has a number average molecular weight of from 2,500 to 3,500, a weight average molecular weight of from 8,000 to 15,000 and a softening point of from 110.degree. C., and which is substantially free from an ingredient insoluble in tetrahydrofuran, and the charge controlling agent comprising a metal complex salt compound represented by the following formula (1): ##STR1## wherein M represents a metal element selected from the group consisting of zinc, iron, nickel and cobalt, and R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 each represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms.

A negatively electrifiable, non-magnetic and single component developer comprising a binder resin, a carbon black and a charge control agent, wherein the carbon black has an average primary particle diameter of 20 to 50 nm and a pH of 2 to 5, and the charge control agent comprises a compound represented by the following formula: ##STR1## wherein M represents a metal atom selected from the group consisting of zinc, iron, nickel and cobalt, and R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 each represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms. An image forming process using the developer is also disclosed. This one-component developer, which is suitable for use as a black toner in color image formation, can be stably charged and transported over long to give images free from fogging and having evenness of density and hardly poses problems such as dirts and color mixing over long.

Non-magnetic one-component developer and image forming process

A magnetic toner comprising a binder resin having dispersed therein a magnetic powder is disclosed, wherein the magnetic toner has a volume average particle diameter (D.sub.50) of from 4 to 9 .mu.m, the magnetic powder has a number average particle diameter of from 0.15 to 0.25 .mu.m (hereinafter simply referred to as a particle diameter), a BET specific surface area of from 6 to 8 m.sup.2 /g, and a residual magnetization of from 7 to 10 emu/g, the magnetic powder is present in an amount of from 30 to 70% based on the total weight of the magnetic toner, and the magnetic toner has adhered to the surface thereof silica powder having been rendered hydrophobic. The magnetic toner exhibits superior performance in terms of image density, definition, dot and fine line reproducibility, and environmental stability.
