The present invention has an object to provide a flaky particulate material giving skin an excellent smoothness, which is free from whitening problem upon use thereof owing to its high transparency. The present invention also has another object to provide a cosmetic composition containing the flaky particulate material. The present invention relates to flaky particulate material, which has an average coefficient of friction is not more than 0.50, and a total light transmittance is not less than 85%. A particle in the flaky particulate material comprises a substrate particle made of one material selected from the group consisting of mica, a synthetic mica, sericite, talc, barium sulfate and aluminum oxide. The present invention provides a flaky particulate material that gives skin excellent smoothness, a natural tone, and a matt appearance. The flaky particulate material of the present invention gives a cosmetic composition which provides great comfort of use, and an excellent appearance.

Flaky particle and cosmetic

The present invention provides an ultrafine barium sulfate particle, which improves, even if the particle is mixed in a water-borne composition, such as a water-borne coating composition or a water-borne ink composition, color saturation and gloss of color pigments, such as carbon black, or improve orientation of aluminum flakes or pearl pigments, which have been used in metallic coating compositions. The present invention also provides a water-borne coating composition and a water-borne ink composition, which contain the ultrafine barium sulfate particle. The present invention provides an ultrafine barium sulfate particle, comprising barium sulfate; and (1) a hydroxide and/or an oxide of at least one metallic element selected from the group consisting of Al, Si and Zr; and/or (2) a phosphate of at least one metallic element selected from the group consisting of Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba; the barium sulfate being coated with the hydroxide and/or oxide (1) and/or the phosphate (2).

Ultrafine barium sulfate particle, water-based coating composition, and water-based ink composition

A plate barium sulfate is described, which has a particle size of from 1 to 100 .mu.m or from 5 to 150 .mu.m, wherein neither a sulfide nor a soluble barium salt is detected by an analysis method based on the Japanese Cosmetics Material Standard.
