A frame receiving unit calculates the number of a frame to be compressed and gets an image data from the frame. A frame checking unit checks the type of the frame and allocates required code memory. When the frame is an I frame, a frequency conversion unit converts the image to a spatial frequency, a quantization unit quantizes the spatial frequency, and a variable-length coding unit performs variable-length coding. At the same time, a reverse quantization unit performs reverse-quantization and a reverse frequency conversion unit performs reverse-conversion to create a reference image. When the frame is a P frame, a motion search unit searches for a motion of the image. The frequency conversion unit converts a difference between the image and the reference image to the spatial frequency, the quantization unit performs quantization, and the variable-length coding unit performs variable-length coding. At the same time, the reverse quantization unit performs reverse-quantization, the reverse frequency conversion unit performs reverse frequency conversion to return the reverse conversion result to the difference of the images, and a motion compensation unit combines the result with a motion-compensated reference image. When the frame is a B frame, a code indicating that the frame is the same as the reference frame is generated. The generated code is output to the allocated code memory.

In a sound-picture synchronous compression device, the picture compression process is performed on a designated amount of picture codes. Then, a necessary amount of sound codes is calculated on the basis of a time of the picture compression process and is subjected to sound compression process. Consequently, compressed picture codes and compressed sound codes are transmitted to a sound-picture synchronous reproduction device. Herein, the picture reproduction process is performed on a designated amount of the compressed picture codes. A plurality of display control portions display multiple text sets simultaneously on a display screen. Meanwhile, only one reading portion converts a text set into voice to be read out. When the reading portion is not reading out the text set, a request for changing a selected text set is accepted, and when it is reading out the text set, such a request is rejected. Further, the title of the text set which is selected to be read out is displayed on the display. Since only one reading portion is provided, the exclusive control for reading out the text set can be facilitated. When a certain menu screen is reached, a history table is accessed to read frequencies of use of a plurality of corresponding videos. Heading parts of frequently used videos are sent to the terminal unit, where they are stored in a terminal memory. With a final selection of a video, its heading part is read from the terminal memory, to be reproduced. A desired video quickly starts. The remaining part of the video is sent from the server.

Motion picture retrieval system

A video reproducing apparatus which prevents a degradation in the picture quality by utilizing difference codes which have been added as additional information in coding process based DCT coding. Each of the taken-in codes has its header analyzed by a header analyzer 11, is decoded in a decoder 12, inverse-quantized in an inverse quantizer 13, and inverse-DCTed in an IDCT stage 14, thus yielding expanded pictures. If additional information has been added, the information is read by an additional information reader 21, the read difference codes contained in the extra information are expanded by an additional information decoder 22. The expanded difference code and video data from the IDCT stage 14 are synthesized by a video synthesizer 23 to yield high definition video data.

In order to provide a presentation system for displaying various kinds of media data simultaneously on a display device of any resolution, a scenario description file is prepared in the invention for storing information concerning media data to be presented. A presentation system of the invention comprises an initial information table analyzing section and media information table analyzing section for analyzing the scenario description file, a layout correcting section for correcting positional information and sizes of display images of display media data described in the scenario description file, according to the resolution difference between the display device employed in editing the scenario description file and that for presentation, together with a font preparing section for correcting character sizes and character thicknesses, and a time description correcting section for correcting a reproduction time error caused by correcting the display sizes of the media data.
