An apparatus for continuous high temperature gas treatment of particulate matter including a starting material supply port () through which starting particulate matter is supplied from an upper part of the apparatus; a treatment, gas supply port () through which a treating gas is supplied; a product discharge port () through which a product after treatment is discharged from a lower part of the apparatus; a treatment chamber () in which the particulate matter is treated with the treatment gas; a gas-solid separation chamber () provided in fluid communication with an upper part of the treatment chamber (); and a cooling chamber () provided in fluid communication with a lower part of the treatment chamber (). A heater () is provided on the outer periphery of the upper part of the treatment chamber (), and a cooler () is provided on the outer periphery of the cooling chamber ().

Apparatus and method for continuous high temperature gas treatment of particulate matter

A vertical solid-liquid contact apparatus including a plurality of stirring chambers disposed vertically adjacent to each other in series, a plurality of partitioning plates each partitioning an adjacent pair of the stirring chambers and provided with a communicating hole for communication between the adjacent pair of the stirring chambers, and a liquid inlet and a solid inlet provided at an upper part and a lower part of the apparatus. Each stirring chamber having an inner side wall defining the stirring chamber, a radially ejecting stirring blade, and at least one baffle fixed on the inner side wall. The stirring blade and the baffle are positionally biased to a lower side of the stirring chamber. The apparatus provides a good uniformity of solid-liquid flows and a high contact efficiency, is also simple in structure and allows easy scale-up.

A vertical multi-stage fluidized bed apparatus including a plurality of horizontal perforated partitioning plates disposed therein so as to partition the apparatus is provided, wherein an upper horizontal perforated partitioning plate is set to have a larger aperture rate than a lower horizontal perforated partitioning plate. From a lower part of the apparatus, feed carbon and fluidizing gas are continuously supplied so as to provide a gas superficial velocity in the fluidized bed which is 2-4 times a minimum fluidizing velocity of the feed carbon, thereby subjecting the feed carbon to fluidization with the fluidizing gas and activation with steam at 750-950&#xb0; C. simultaneously to discharge activated carbon continuously from an upper part of the apparatus. As a result, activated carbon of even a high degree of activation is produced at a high yield comparable to that obtained in a batchwise operation.

A battery electrode material having a large charge-discharge capacity and capable of providing a (non-aqueous solvent-type secondary) battery of a high energy density is provided in the form of a carbonaceous material having a microtexture suitable for doping with lithium (ions). Such a carbonaceous material is produced through a process of heating a starting organic material for carbonization including a step of heating the organic material in a halogen gas-containing inert gas atmosphere in a specific temperature range (800.degree.-1400.degree. C.) below the final carbonization temperature.
