The present invention provides an aqueous colored base coating composition (A) comprising a hydroxyl- and carboxyl-containing acrylic resin (A-1), a melamine resin (A-2), an alicyclic epoxy-containing compound (A-3), a neutralizing agent (A-4) and a coloring pigment (A-5). The present invention further provides a method for forming a topcoat which comprises applying the aqueous colored base coating composition (A) to a substrate and applying to the base coat an organic solvent type clear coating composition (B) to be cured by the crosslinking reaction between a carboxyl group and an epoxy group.

This invention provides an aqueous intercoat composition comprising, as main components, (A) a polyester resin having a hydroxyl group and a carboxyl group in one molecule, (B) a blocked product of at least one polyisocyanate selected from a polymer of aliphatic polyisocyanate, an adduct of said polymer with an active hydrogen-containing compound and an adduct of aliphatic polyisocyanate with an active hydrogen-containing compound, and (C) water. The present invention provides a wet-on-wet coating method comprising applying a thermosetting aqueous coating composition (A), and applying a thermosetting aqueous coating composition (B) to the uncured coating surface of the aqueous coating composition (A) wherein the aqueous coating composition (A) contains a base resin with a neutralization value of 20 to 30 KOH mg/g and the aqueous coating composition (B) contains a base resin with a neutralization value higher by 10 to 20 KOH mg/g than the base resin of the aqueous coating composition (A).
