The present invention relates to a method for regenerating a filter that traps particulate matter contained in exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine. The regeneration method includes increasing an amount of soot having a low degree of graphitization in the filter. After the amount of soot having the low degree of graphitization is increased, a temperature of the filter is increased.

An exhaust gas purifying system of the present invention comprises a first catalyst which contains a noble metal and reduces hydrocarbons contained in exhaust gas, and a second catalyst which is disposed downstream of the first catalyst and contains &#x3b2;-zeolite. In the exhaust gas purifying system, a mixed gas having an air-fuel ratio of not less than 25 is burned in an internal combustion engine, and the internal combustion engine discharges the exhaust gas having an oxygen concentration of not less than 4% continuously or intermittently.

A methanol reforming catalyst that generates a reformed gas containing hydrogen by reforming methanol in the atmosphere containing oxygen and steam contains a metal oxide support and Pd&#x2014;Zr alloy with which the metal oxide support is impregnated. The reforming catalyst accelerate a steam reforming reaction of the methanol as an endothermic reaction and a partial oxidation reaction of the methanol as an exothermic reaction while suppressing generation of CO gas. Also, a methanol reforming apparatus having the methanol reforming catalyst does not need a heater for the reforming reaction.

An exhaust gas purifying system for an automotive internal combustion engine. The exhaust gas purifying system comprises a flow-through monolithic catalyst disposed in an exhaust gas passageway through which exhaust gas flows. The monolithic catalyst functions to adsorb and oxidize a soluble organic fraction in exhaust gas, to adsorb nitrogen oxides in exhaust gas in a condition in which a temperature of exhaust gas is not higher than 200&#xb0; C. and to allow carbon particle in exhaust gas to pass through the monolithic catalyst. Additionally, a filter catalyst is disposed in the exhaust gas passageway downstream of the flow-through monolithic catalyst. The filter catalyst functions to trap the carbon particle and to oxidize hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and nitrogen monoxide in exhaust gas.

A catalyst () for selectively oxidizing carbon monoxide, wherein a noble metal () and an active oxygen supply material () capable of oxidizing carbon monoxide are supported on a substrate (). Favorable selective oxidation of carbon monoxide can be obtained by setting the distance between the noble metal () and the active oxygen supply material () such that the noble metal () is close enough to accept active oxygen from the active oxygen supply material (), and preferably within 0.1 mm. Since a heater or a reducing apparatus can be omitted in these apparatuses, etc., sizes of these apparatuses, etc. become small and thus these apparatuses, etc. are suitable for the installing into the mobile body.

A catalyst composition contains a perovskite composite oxide of the type expressed by a rational formula ABO , wherein A consists of two types of constituent elements of A&prime; and A&Prime; and B consists of two types of constituent elements of B&prime; and B&Prime;, and the perovskite composite oxide is expressed by a general formula A&prime; A&Prime; B&prime; B&Prime; O . The A&prime; is La or Ce, the A&Prime; is at least one element selected from the group consisting of La, Ca, Sm, Ce, Sr, Ba and Pr, the B&prime; is at least one type element selected from the group consisting of Co, Fe, Mn and Gd, and the B&Prime; is any one type of a noble metal such as Ru, Rh, Pd, Pt, or the like. This catalyst composition can be employed as a reforming catalyst of the alcohol or the hydrocarbon-based gas to produce hydrogen gas for a fuel cell, or as an electrode catalyst.

In order to improve performance of NOx reduction, an additional fuel injection immediately after a main fuel injection is performed. By such additional fuel injection, hydrogen (H ) is supplied to a NOx trap catalyst. And in order to prevent engine output torque from varying by the additional fuel injection, the main fuel injection is controlled by whether the additional fuel injection is performed.

A feedback type air-fuel ratio control system controls the air-fuel ratio of air-fuel mixture fed to an internal combustion engine in accordance with an information signal issued from a first oxygen sensor installed in an exhaust line of the engine. The exhaust line has a catalytic converter at a position downstream of the first oxygen sensor. There is further provided a system in the control system, which detects deterioration of the first oxygen sensor. The system comprises a computer and a second oxygen sensor of delayed response type installed in the exhaust line at a position upstream of the converter. The computer defines higher and lower slice levels with respect to the output of the second oxygen sensor and compares the output of the second oxygen sensor with the higher and lower slice levels.
