A data storage system configured as node in a distributed data store is presented. The system comprises an RDMA-enabled network adapter, a buffer management unit, and an RDMA application interface. The network adapter is configured to establish communication with one or more other nodes in the distributed data store. The buffer management unit is configured to pre-register a plurality of memory blocks as RDMA buffers with one or more other nodes. The RDMA application interface is configured to: process RDMA operations initiated by one of the other nodes, and send an acknowledgement message to the one of the other nodes via the RDMA-enabled network adapter in response to completion of an RDMA operation initiated by the one of the other nodes, wherein the acknowledgement message includes a target address corresponding to a start address of an RDMA buffer available for use in a subsequent RDMA operation.

A data storage system configured as node in a distributed data store is presented. The system comprises an RDMA-enabled network adapter and a role management unit. The RDMA-enabled network adapter is configured to communicate with one or more other data storage systems in the distributed data store. The role management unit is configured to: detect a node identification number associated with each of the other data storage systems, compare a node identification number assigned to the data storage system with each of the detected node identification numbers to generate comparison results, determine whether the data storage system is to perform either a server role or a client role with respect to each of the other data storage systems on the basis of the comparison results, and set up the network adapter to operate in both an RDMA server mode and an RDMA client mode during runtime according to the determined roles.

An information handling system is provided. The information handling system includes systems and methods for expanding the port count in a single Fiber Channel domain by adding modular Fiber Channel switches. Such a system includes a system enclosure that contains a plurality of Fiber Channel modules configured to send and receive Fiber Channel packets, the Fiber Channel modules providing a plurality of Fiber Channel ports and a switch processor coupled to the plurality of Fiber Channel ports and to a plurality of Ethernet ports. The switch processor is configured to apply a stacking header to Fiber Channel packets for transmission from one of the plurality of Ethernet ports over a stacking link to another switch processor in another system enclosure.

In a network where there are two local area networks (LANs) connected over a wide area network (WAN) by paralleled LAN to WAN devices at each end of the WAN, Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) connections may be requested by a first near end LAN to WAN device and received at a first far end LAN to WAN device but the acknowledgement may be returned to a second far end LAN to WAN device. The second far end LAN to WAN device contacts the first far end LAN to WAN device and the TCP connection is moved to the second far end LAN to WAN device, which provides the acknowledgement to the first near end LAN to WAN device to complete the TCP connection. Similar operations occur during active TCP connection operation but with certain queued data being flushed during the TCP connection transfer.
