A coated cutting tool includes a rake face, a flank face, and a cutting edge region between and adjoining the flank face and the rake face in a nose area of a cutting tool insert. The cutting edge region is intersected by an edge line and defines a cutting edge sector that defines an cutting edge radius, r. The coated cutting tool includes a substrate with a coating having a thickness between 1 μm and 40 μm, where the coating includes an α-AlOlayer and an MTCVD TiCN layer located between the substrate and the α-AlOlayer. The α-AlOlayer exhibits a texture coefficient TC(hkl), as measured by X-ray diffraction using CuKa radiation and θ-2θ scan, defined according to Harris formula where I(hkl) is the measured integrated area intensity of the (hkl) reflection with corresponding reference intensity I(hkl), and n is the number of reflections used in the calculation.

Coated cutting tool

A coated cutting tool insert includes a substrate of cemented carbide, cermet, ceramics, steel or cubic boron nitride having deposited thereon a coating having a total thickness of 60 &#x3bc;m, including one or more layers having a wear resistant layer of &#x3b1;-AlOof a thickness of 1 to 45 &#x3bc;m deposited by chemical vapour deposition (CVD). The &#x3b1;-AlOlayer includes at least two portions, a first thickness portion and a second thickness portion immediately on top of the first thickness portion. The first thickness portion has an essentially columnar &#x3b1;-AlOgrain structure, and at a transition from the first thickness portion to the second thickness portion the grain boundaries of at least 1 out of 25 neighboring grains of the &#x3b1;-AlOgrains undergo a directional change into a direction that is essentially perpendicular, 90&#xb1;45 degrees, to the grain boundaries in the first thickness portion.

Alumina coated cutting tool

A cutting tool insert having a cemented carbide substrate and a coating including a layer of NbN, wherein the cemented carbide substrate includes 11-12.5 wt % cobalt, 0.2-1.2 wt % chromium, and 86.3-88.4 wt % wolfram carbide.

Coated cutting insert

A cutting insert includes a top surface, an edge surface and a cutting edge between the top and edge surfaces. The cutting edge is symmetrical about a centerline. The cutting edge has a first edge radius at a first point at the centerline of the cutting edge and a different, second edge radius at second points on opposite sides of and remote from the centerline of the cutting edge. The first edge radius is larger than the second edge radius. The top surface includes a land surface between the cutting edge and a remaining portion of the top surface. The land surface defines a surface that is distinct from the remaining portion of the top surface. A width of the land surface behind the cutting edge at the first point at the center of the cutting edge is different than the width of the land surface behind the second points.

Cutting insert with symmetrical, radiused cutting edges

A cutting tool insert for turning of hardened steels and tool steels includes a textured CVD &#x3b1;-AlOcoated cemented carbide body. The cemented carbide body has 4.0-7.0 wt-% Co and 0.25-0.50 wt-% Cr and an S-value of 0.68-0.88 and a coercivity (Hc) of 28-38 kA/m. The &#x3b1;-AlOlayer has a thickness ranging from 7 to 12 &#x3bc;m, is composed of columnar grains having a length/width ratio from 2 to 12 and is deposited on an MTCVD Ti(C,N) layer having a thickness from 4 to 12 &#x3bc;m. The alumina layer is characterised by a pronounced (006) growth texture.

Coated cutting tool insert for turning of steels

A cutting tool insert for machining by chip removal includes a body of a hard alloy of cemented carbide, cermet, ceramics, cubic boron nitride based material or high speed steel, onto which a hard and wear resistant coating is deposited by physical vapor deposition. The coating includes a polycrystalline nanolaminated structure of alternating layers A and B where layer A is (Ti,Al,Me1)N and Me1 is optionally one or more of the metal elements from group 3, 4, 5 or 6 in the periodic table, layer B is (Ti,Si,Me2)N and Me2 is optionally one or more of the metal elements from group 3, 4, 5 or 6 in the periodic table including Al with a thickness between 0.5 and 20 &#x3bc;m and method of making the same. This insert is particularly useful in metal cutting applications generating high temperatures with improved edge integrity, machining of super alloys, stainless and hardened steels.
