A component (22; 23; 122) is positioned on or formed as part of a plate (20) which is supported by a bearing (14) and which is supported at the position of the component (22; 23; 122) to be positioned by a support (8). The positioning is carried out by a die (10) which together with the support is controlled by a control system, comprising one or more reference signal sources, comparators (24, 30) and amplifiers (25, 31) , in such a way that the component (22; 23; 122) is accurately positioned relative to reference plane (26) relative to the plate. When the desired position of the component is reached, it is ensured that no elastic deformation are present in the plate. For this purpose, a device for carrying out the method comprises a control system (29, 30, 31, 32; 8, 36, 38; 138, 148) which controls the die (10) and/or the support (8) positions or support the die and the support or the plate (20) in such a way that the plate is free from undesired elastic deformations at least when the component reaches the desired position.

The end portions of optical fibers to be connected are accommodated in envelopes having a circularly-cylindrical outer surfaces. A connector includes a coupling sleeve with a central cavity which extends in a longitudinal direction. The central cavity is shaped as a prism having a triangular cross-section. An inscribed circle has a diameter which is smaller than the diameter of the outer surfaces of the envelopes. The walls of the central cavity are formed by free end portions of three leaf springs. The non-free ends of the leaf springs are regularly distributed around the circumference of the coupling sleeve and are secured to the wall of a housing which encloses the central cavity. The planes of the leaf springs enclose angles of approximately 60.degree. with respect to each other. When the envelopes are inserted into the central cavity, the three springs of the central cavity are independently deflected outward, so that the two outer surfaces are clamped in the central cavity with their axes aligned.

The invention relates to a method of manufacturing a plastic record carrier, in particular a video disc, in which a mold is provided with a fluid molding resin. A substrate is then deformed into a convex shape and pressed against the resin disposed on the center of the mold. The molding resin is rolled over the surface of the mold with a circular fluid front while the shape of the substrate is simultaneously changed from convex to planar form. After the molding resin has been spread over the entire mold and the planar substrate bears against the resin layer, the molding resin is then cured. The substrate is preferably deformed by flexibly supporting a planar substrate about its edge and then applying a different gas pressure on both sides of the substrate. The molding resin is preferably radiation-curable and is cured by exposure to, for example, ultra-violet light through the substrate.
