A hydrocarbon conversion catalyst is disclosed which catalyst comprises a refractory inorganic oxide, a Group VIB metal component, a Group VIII metal component and a fluoride component wherein the last step in the catalyst preparation is the incorporation of the fluorine component and a subsequent calcination in contact with a flowing gas. Other embodiments of the present invention describe the use of the catalyst for hydrocarbon conversion and preferred methods of catalyst manufacture.

Hydrocarbon conversion catalyst and use thereof

A method of preparing an extruded catalyst composition. An acidic alumina hydrosol is admixed with a dry mixture consisting essentially of a finely divided alumina and a finely divided crystalline aluminosilicate. The resulting mixture is extruded, dried and calcined to yield a catalyst particularly useful for the selective reforming of a naphtha fraction to produce a high octane reformate product and a liquid petroleum gas.

Method of manufacturing an extruded catalyst composition

A method of preparing alumina extrudate particles. Finely divided alumina is admixed with from about 2 to about 10 wt. % alumina hydrosol and sufficient water added thereto to produce a dough extrudable at less than about 150 psig. The mixture is then extruded, dried and calcined. The alumina hydrosol functions as a source of alumina as well as a binder and/or lubricant, and obviates the need of extraneous binders or lubricants. The method is particularly useful to produce extruded particles of low average bulk density.
