A refinish coating composition is provided comprising: a) at least one refinish coating resin; b) at least one solvent; c) at least one pigment; d) optionally, at least one crosslinking agent; e) at least one cellulose mixed ester having a weight average molecular weight (M) greater than 10,000 and f) at least one low molecular weight cellulose mixed ester. In addition, processes for coating the refinish coating composition on a substrate are also provided.

Refinish coating compositions comprising low molecular weight cellulose mixed esters

A basecoat composition is provided comprising: a) at least one film-forming polymer selected from the group consisting of acrylic polyols and polyester polyols; b) at least one rheological modifier; c) at least one solvent; d) at least one pigment; e) optionally, at least one microgel; f) optionally, at least one crosslinking agent; and g) at least one cellulose mixed ester. A wet-on-wet-on wet process is also provided. The process for coating a substrate comprises: a) applying a primer to said substrate to produce a primed substrate; b) applying a basecoat composition to said primed substrate while said primer is wet to produce a basecoated substrate; and c) applying a clearcoat composition to said basecoated substrate while said basecoat composition is wet and optionally said primer is wet to produce a coated substrate. Coated articles are also provided.

Basecoat coating compositions comprising low molecular weight cellulose mixed esters

Cellulose mixed esters are disclosed having low molecular weights and low degrees of polymerization. These new cellulose mixed esters include cellulose acetate propionate and cellulose acetate butyrate. The esters exhibit solubility in a wide range of organic solvents with minimal viscosity increase, are compatible with a wide variety of resins, and are useful in coatings and inks compositions as binder resins and rheology modifiers.

Low molecular weight cellulose mixed esters and their use as low viscosity binders and modifiers in coating compositions

This invention provides the preparation of water-dispersible polyester/acrylic hybrids via a two-stage emulsion polymerization process. For example, methacrylic acid and/or 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate are copolymerized with styrene/acrylic monomers to yield a relatively hydrophilic and hydro-plasticized first stage. Subsequent additions of hydrophobic monomers to this first stage 'seed' results in an inversion of the latex such that the more hydrophilic first stage is at the particle surface. This results not only in improved stability of the resulting latex without the use of additional surfactants, as evidenced by the production of reduced amounts of coagulum, while it also offers relatively low minimum filming temperatures due to the hydroplasticization of the shell of the particle. Furthermore, the use of the water-dispersible polyester results in extremely fine latex particle sizes which can significantly enhance coating properties such as film gloss and clarity.

Ink and coating compositions containing a blend of water-dispersible

Disclosed is a process for preparing ink millbase by use of a polymer blend of compatible polyesters and acrylic polymers. The polyesters are water-dispersible as a result of sulfonate groups on the polyester backbone. Use of the polymer blend results in an improvement in pigment particle size reduction during grinding.

Disclosed are ink compositions having improved freeze-thaw properties that contain an effective amount of propylene glycol, for example, 0.5 to 10 weight percent. The polyester is exemplified in having an acid component of from about 75 to about 84 mole % isophthalic acid and conversely from about 25 to about 16 mole % 5-sodiosulfoisophthalic acid, and having a glycol component of from about 45 to about 60 mole % diethylene glycol and conversely from about 55 to about 44 mole % 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol or ethylene glycol or mixtures thereof. The polymer blends are useful for preparing ink compositions having improved block resistance, water resistance, and alcohol resistance.
