Examples generate a route point radius for a geofence. A point of interest (POI) is identified. The coordinates for a route point on a navigational path associated with the POI is obtained. A distance from the coordinates of the route point to the POI is determined to generate a radius. An extension amount to encompass at least a portion of the navigational path is added to the radius to generate a route point radius. A contextual environment of a user traveling on the navigational path is utilized to adjust the route point radius. The contextual environment includes the mode of travel and/or the direction of travel of the user. A geofence is generated based on at least one route point radius associated with the POI. An alert is triggered when a user crosses a perimeter of the geofence encompassing the portion of the navigational path.

Defining a contextual geofence

Technologies are described herein for providing contextually-aware location sharing services for computing devices. In some configurations, the techniques disclosed herein can involve a number of computing devices configured to select and utilize location data from one or more resources based on one or more factors. An analysis of contextual data including, but not limited to, the capabilities of the individual devices, a status of one or more components, or the availability or cost of data, allows individual devices to dynamically select and utilize location data or a source of location data to accommodate a range of scenarios. Techniques disclosed herein can also detect the presence of a changed scenario and take one or more actions based, at least in part, on data defining the changed scenario.

Contextually-aware location sharing services

A determination of whether a mobile computing device is indoors or outdoors can incorporate any of a variety of factors to make an efficient and accurate determination of indoor-outdoor status. Such a status can be useful for use in conjunction with positioning services. Features such as bounding boxes, activity determination, and the like can be used to strike a balance between power consumption and accuracy. A positive user experience with fewer false detections can result.

Accounting for indoor-outdoor transitions during position determination

A determination is made, at a device, as to whether data identifying signals detected at the device include data from a non-stationary wireless beacon. If the data includes data from a non-stationary wireless beacon then observation data including both the data and an associated trusted position of the device is maintained in an observation buffer; otherwise, the observation data is dropped by the device. The observation data from the observation buffer is provided to a service, which determines whether the observation data conforms to one or more patterns, the one or more patterns having been identified based on one or more criteria used by the device in providing the observation data to the service. If the observation data conforms to the one or more patterns then the observation data is maintained by the service; otherwise, the observation data is dropped by the service.
