An electrode for a fuel cell, including a porous catalytic carrier including conductive fibers having two particle diameter distribution peaks of a first particle diameter distribution peak existing at a small particle diameter side and a second particle diameter distribution peak existing at a large particle diameter side, wherein said conducting fibers are carbon nano-fibers formed from a catalyst for formation prepared by preparing a mixed powder including one or more of a reducible metallic oxide powder and a non-reducible metallic oxide powder, mixing and pulverizing the mixed powder, and heating the mixed powder under reducing atmosphere; catalyst to be carried on said conductive fibers belonging to the first particle diameter distribution peak; and a proton conductive material adhered on surface of at least the conducive fibers belonging to the first particle diameter distribution peak, so as to come into contact with the catalyst.

A liquid fuel cell device includes a liquid fuel cell body with a fuel electrode, an oxidizer electrode and an electrolyte layer between the electrodes, and a liquid fuel supply system supplying a liquid fuel to the fuel electrode. The fuel supply system includes a first tank configured to contain a concentration-adjusted liquid fuel and supply the concentration-adjusted liquid fuel to the fuel electrode, and a second tank configured to contain a high-concentration liquid fuel and supply the high-concentration liquid fuel to the first tank. The first tank includes an internal liquid transfer device configured to transfer the concentration-adjusted liquid fuel to the fuel electrode. The cell device further includes an external driving device provided outside the first tank and configured to drive the internal liquid transfer device. The external driving device is physically separated from the internal liquid transfer device.

This invention provides a fuel cell catalyst including a carbon support containing at least one first element selected from the group consisting of B, N, and P, and catalyst particles supported on the carbon support, wherein the catalyst particles include at least one of platinum particles and alloy particles containing Pt and an element A, and the element A contains at least one element selected from the group consisting of platinum group elements and period 4 to 6 transition metal elements.

Disclosed is a fuel cell in the form of stacked unit cells each having a power generating section composed of a fuel electrode, an oxidant electrode, and an electrolyte plate held therebetween, which are placed on top of the other. In this fuel cell, a liquid fuel is introduced into each unit cell by the capillary action and evaporated in each unit cell in a fuel evaporating portion, so that the fuel electrode is supplied with the evaporated fuel.

A method is disclosed for selectively separating carbon dioxide gas by contacting the carbon dioxide containing gas with a composition containing lithium zirconia at a temperature of 450.degree. C. or more so that carbon dioxide reacts with the lithium zirconia to produce lithium carbonate and zirconia. Subjecting the lithium carbonate and zirconia to a temperature of 600.degree. C. or more so as to produce lithium zirconia and carbon dioxide.

Disclosed is a molten carbonate fuel cell comprising an electrolyte body sandwiched between a pair of electrodes, outflow of an electrolyte from the electrolyte body being diminished to suppress an increase of the internal resistance and occurrence of a gas crossover, which accompany the outflow of the electrolyte, so as to increase the life time of the fuel cell. The molten carbonate fuel cell of the present invention comprises a pair of conductive electrodes, an electrolyte body sandwiched between the pair of electrodes and including a porous body containing a retaining material and a reinforcing material and an electrolyte impregnated in the porous body and containing an alkali carbonate mixture, the retaining material containing fine particles having an average particle diameter of 0.2 to 0.6 .mu.m and the reinforcing material containing short fibers having a diameter of 0.5 to 5 .mu.m and a length of at most 50 .mu.m, fuel gas supplying means for supplying a fuel gas to one of the pair of electrodes, and oxidant gas supplying means for supplying an oxidant gas to the other of the pair of electrodes.

Disclosed is a stainless steel member with a high corrosion resistance suitable for a structural member used in highly corrosive environments, such as an edge seal plate of a molten carbonate fuel cell. This stainless steel member includes a base material consisting of stainless steel containing chromium, and a corrosion-protective layer formed on the surface of the base material. In this corrosion-protective layer, a granular heterophase containing chromium is precipitated in an ordered alloy consisting of aluminum and the constituent elements of the base material.

The molten carbonate fuel cell includes a pair of conductive electrodes, an electrolyte body sandwiched between the pair of electrodes and constituted by a porous body containing as a filler at least two heterogeneous particles selected from the group consisting of LiAl.sub.x O.sub.y (4.5.ltoreq.x.ltoreq.5.5 and 7.25.ltoreq.y .ltoreq.8.75), LiAl.sub.a O.sub.b (0.89.ltoreq.a .ltoreq.1.11 and 1.80.ltoreq.b.ltoreq.2.20), lithium zirconate, and stabilized zirconia, and an electrolyte consisting of an alkali carbonate mixture impregnated in the porous body, fuel gas supplying member for supplying a fuel gas to one of the pair of electrodes, and an oxidant gas supplying member for supplying an oxidant gas to the other of the pair of electrodes.
