A spline member manufacturing apparatus includes a shaving punch, a shaving die, a spline punch, and a stripper. The stripper supports a first surface of a base plate portion and an outer circumferential surface of a boss portion. The shaving punch is advanced relatively, while a material and the stripper are being pressed so that cutout portions are formed in an outer circumference portion of the base plate portion by the shaving punch and the shaving die. The shaving punch is further advanced relatively while the outer circumferential surface of the base plate portion is held by the shaving die, so that a spline portion is formed by inserting the spline punch along the inner circumferential surface of the boss portion.

A method of forming a chamfered through hole having a chamfered portion at each end thereof by: forming a prepared hole in a plate-like portion; forming a first chamfered portion by driving a first punch; forming a second chamfered portion by driving a second punch, which has a second tapered surface and a generally columnar central pressing portion protruding from the center of the second tapered surface and having an annular corner at a tip thereof, and thereby forming the second chamfered portion and a central recess recessed axially inward; and punching out an unnecessary portion protruding radially inward of the prepared hole by using a finishing punch having an outer diameter equal to or smaller than that of the corner of the central pressing portion. The punching out the unnecessary portion is performed by punching from the first chamfered portion toward the second chamfered portion using the finishing punch.

Excessive increase in processing loads and damages to a thickening roller resulting from pressing the thickening roller against the blank from the outer peripheral end face are prevented, and processing of a cylindrical member having an enlarged diameter portion is made possible. With the side surface of an intermediate portion of a blank abutting and being supported on an increased diameter portion of a mandrel, a thickening roller is pressed against the side surface of the intermediate portion and moved in the radially inward direction. The blank is thus partially thickened, and the thickened portion is pressed into tooth spaces formed in a columnar portion of the mandrel, whereby splines are formed.

The disclosed method produces a spline-grooved cylindrical member, e.g. torque converter front cover, including a cylindrical portion having a target wall thickness t from a plate blank having a plate thickness t An outer peripheral portion of a disc-shaped blank is plastically deformed by pressing it against a mandrel with the concave peripheral edge of a thickness-increasing roller, so that a thick wall portion, of a thickness greater than the plate thickness t of the blank, is formed in the cylindrical portion. The thick wall portion is then pressed against the mandrel by forming rollers to form spline grooves therein. Thus, the other portions of the product have a wall thickness which is not unnecessarily increased. In this manner, the wall thickness t of the cylindrical portion is not entirely dictated by the wall thickness t of the blank material. Thus, a cylindrical member resistant to high pressures acting on its axially-extending outer cylindrical portion can be produced with an optimal configuration.

Method for producing cylindrical member having spline grooves, and cylindrical member having spline grooves

The present invention provides an internally-toothed member of reduced size and enhanced quality, durability and productivity in manufacture. This internally-toothed member has a first cylinder portion and a second cylinder portion which is larger in diameter than the first cylinder portion. First and second internal teeth are formed to protrude radially inwardly from inner peripheral surfaces of the first and second cylinder portions respectively. Because a meshing portion can be formed as second internal teeth protruding from an inner periphery of the second cylinder portion, the diameter of the internally-toothed member is relatively small. Because the area between the second internal teeth and a concave portion and the concave portion itself do not decrease in thickness during formation of the second internal teeth, it is possible to prevent cracking and to thereby enhance durability of the internally-toothed member. Further, because there is no sagging of the inner peripheral surface of the meshing portion, the quality of the internally-toothed member is further enhanced.

A multiple disk clutch includes a clutch drum having an interior surface with a plurality of spline grooves, a servo piston, a clutch plate with splines engaged within the spline grooves, and a cushion plate, with splines engaged within the spline grooves, arranged between the clutch plate and the servo piston. The splines of the clutch plate and those of the cushion plate are engaged within different spline grooves so that the splines of the clutch plates and those of the cushion plate do not contact each other when the clutch is engaged by a load imposed by operation of the piston.

Multiple disk clutch and method and apparatus for forming clutch drum

An internally toothed member is shown suitable for use as a clutch drum in an automatic transmission. The internally toothed member has the shape of a cup with an open end and a central axis. The cup-shaped member has first internal teeth extending in the axial direction and second internal teeth extending further toward the open end of the member than the first internal teeth. The internal teeth are each formed on an inner circumferential surface of the cup-shaped member in each of a plurality of locations spaced in the circumferential direction. Also, a groove for receiving a snap ring is formed in the second internal teeth closer to the open end than end faces of the first internal teeth facing the open end. Because the first and second internal teeth are formed projecting radially inward, they do not lower the rigidity of the internally toothed member. Also, because it is not necessary to fix a cylindrical member to the outside of the internally toothed member for reinforcement, working man-hours can be reduced and it is possible to lower the cost of the internally toothed member.
