A method containing: ejecting a coating liquid for a thermosensitive recording material from a slit, the coating liquid being formed of at least two layers; allowing the coating liquid to free-fall while guiding in the form of a curtain with a curtain edge guide; applying the coating liquid on a web which continuously travels; and drying the coating liquid to form a coated film, wherein the method uses a curtain coating method, the coating liquid contains a coating liquid of a thermosensitive recording layer and that of a layer adjacent to the thermosensitive recording layer, and dynamic surface tension A of the coating liquid of the thermosensitive recording layer and that B of the coating liquid of the layer has a difference (A&#x2212;B) of 4 mN/m or less.

A curtain coating method including: ejecting at least one layer of a coating liquid from a slit, and making the ejected coating liquid fall freely from a curtain nozzle lip by using a curtain edge guide which guides the coating liquid in the form of a curtain liquid film, so as to apply the coating liquid onto a continuously running web, wherein the coating liquid is applied by moving the curtain edge guide toward the depth direction when the curtain liquid film is seen from the front.

A coating material capable of making a coating surface smoother, improving glossiness and being suitably used especially as a thermosensitive recording material, is provided, along with a method for producing the same. As a means for realizing the foregoing, there is provided a coating material produced by a multilayer simultaneous coating process, including: an outermost coating surface having moisture evaporation pores, wherein the moisture evaporation pores are 1.5 &#x3bc;m or less in average diameter. A reversible thermosensitive recording material composed of a support, and a reversible thermosensitive recording layer formed on the support, containing a matrix resin and an organic low-molecular-weight material, the organic low-molecular-weight material being dispersed in the form of discrete domains in the matrix resin, thereby constituting a phase-separation structure, with the periodic distance of the phase-separation structure of the reversible thermosensitive recording layer being 1.3 .mu.m or less. This reversible thermosensitive recording material can be produced by applying a coating liquid containing the organic low-molecular-weight material and the matrix resin which are dissolved in a solvent to the support to form the reversible thermosensitive recording layer on the support; and drying the applied coating liquid under such conditions controlled so as to obtain a 1.3 .mu.m or less periodic distance of the phase-separation structure of the reversible thermosensitive recording layer, while measuring the scattering angle of a light transmitted through the reversible thermosensitive recording layer by the light-scattering method.
