The present invention provides a composition comprising a high content of highly pure, low-cost, and safe carotenoid and a method for industrially producing the same. The present invention also provides functional food, a pharmaceutical composition and a cosmetic product comprising such a composition. The present invention further provides a method for producing a composition containing at least 80% of carotenoid, which is characterized in treating a microorganism culture with extraction using a lower alcohol at 80&#xb0; C. at the lowest or a combination of water and a lower alcohol at 80&#xb0; C. at the lowest, and then washing and filtrating the precipitate obtained from the extract solution with a combination of a lower alcohol and water.

Method for production of carotenoid

Diarylalkanes are prepared by alkylating an aromatic compound with a styrene derivative in the presence of a catalyst of specific synthetic porous crystalline material. The aromatic compound can be, for example, benzene, toluene, xylene, ethylbenzene, cumene, etc. The styrene derivative can be, for example, styrene, methylstyrene or the like.

Method for preparing diarylalkanes

A method for producing an aromatic compound styrenic compound adduct comprising the steps of: (1) reacting an aromatic compound and a styrenic compound in a first reactor of fixed-bed flow type in a liquid phase in the presence of a solid acid catalyst, (2) circulating a part of the reaction mixture from the above step to the first reactor (3) feeding a reaction mixture flowing out from the first reactor to a second reactor thereby reducing the content of unsaturated components with the aid of a solid acid catalyst, and (4) distilling the resultant reaction mixture, to thereby obtain a fraction having a reduced content of unsaturated components. The method can be used for producing an aromatic compound/styrenic compound adduct having a reduced content of unsaturated components in high yield and at a low cost.

Method for producing aromatic compound

A fraction of low bromine number mainly containing a styrenic compound/aromatic compound adduct can be attained, by feeding reaction materials of a styrenic compound and an aromatic compound to a fixed-bed flow reactor packed with a solid acid catalyst in a liquid phase at a temperature in the range of 40 to 350&deg; C. to form a styrenic compound/aromatic compound adduct, in which (1) the feed of reaction materials is stopped when the bromine number of the above fraction is increased up to a predetermined value, (2) a saturated aromatic hydrocarbon having a mean value of the proportion of aromatic ring carbons in a molecule of 55% or more is fed to the reactor in a liquid phase at a temperature higher by 5 to 150&deg; C. than that of the reaction mixture just before the above stopping, and (3) the feed of reaction materials is then restarted to obtain the fraction.

Method for producing low bromine number fraction

A method to produce diarylmethane or its derivatives by condensation reaction can be carried out without difficulty and without the deterioration of catalyst, and the intended product can be produced inexpensively by recovering and recycling used alcohol. In the method, dimethoxymethane and an aromatic compound are reacted at a temperature of 80 to 400&deg; C. with an acid catalyst. Further, the method comprises the steps of (1) reacting alcohol with formaldehyde using an acid catalyst to obtain acetal; (2) reacting the acetal and an aromatic compound using an acid catalyst to obtain a reaction mixture containing diarylmethane or its derivatives and alcohol; (3) separating and recovering diarylmethane or its derivatives and alcohol from the reaction mixture, and (4) recycling at least a portion of the recovered alcohol to the step (1).

Method for producing diarylmethane or its derivatives

A method for producing diarylalkanes at a high yield using an aromatic hydrocarbon and inexpensive formalin in the presence of an easily usable solid acid catalyst, and in the method, a mixture of an aromatic hydrocarbon and formalin, said mixture containing 1.5 to 12% by weight of water, is reacted at a temperature of 170 to 450.degree. C. under an elevated pressure in the presence of a zeolitic catalyst.

A plurality of capacitors of the type each including capacitor elements with a very small gap between adjacent electrodes are filled and impregnated with a capacitor oil with the aid of a capacitor oil filling/impregnating apparatus. The apparatus comprises an impregnating chamber including a capacitor oil supplying portion, a charging/discharging platform having a plurality of capacitors placed thereon, and distributing/supplying means arranged above the charging/discharging platform so as to allow the capacitor oil to be supplied to the respective capacitors from above by its free falling-down induced by a dead weight of the capacitor oil itself. A capacitor oil filling/impregnating method is practiced with the aid of the foregoing apparatus by way of the steps of heating the interior of the impregnating chamber under a high level of vacuum to dry the respective capacitors on the charging/discharging platform, cooling the capacitors after completion of the drying operation, supplying the capacitor oil to each capacitor from a capacitor oil refining/supplying system via the capacitor oil supplying portion, keeping the capacitors still for a predetermined period of time after completion of the capacitor oil supplying operation, and allowing the capacitors to be impregnated with the capacitor oil.

A new electrical insulating oil composition having improved low temperature characteristics which composition comprises a mixture of 40% by weight or more of benzyltoluene and the remainder of alkyl substituted diphenylmethane having 15 to 17 carbon atoms which is represented by the following general formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alkyl groups and the total number of carbon atoms in R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 is 1 to 4, except that R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are simultaneously methyl groups; and the proportion of the total quantity of solid phase calculated according to the following general solid-liquid equilibrium equation is 45% by weight or less relative to the total quantity of said composition at -40.degree. An electrical insulating oil composition having good low temperature characteristics which comprises at least 4 members selected from the group consisting of (a) m-ethylbiphenyl, (b) p-ethylbiphenyl, (c) o-benzyltoluene, (d) m-benzyltoluene, (e) p-benzyltoluene, (f) 1,1-diphenylethane, and (g) 1,1-diphenylethylene; and is characterized in that the proportion of solid phase at a temperature of -40.degree. C. of the electrical insulating oil composition is not more than 45% by weight and the proportion of the total quantity of solid phase is calculated according to the following general equation of solid-liquid equilibrium: ##EQU1## wherein X.sub.i is the equilibrium mole fraction of a component i in the liquid phase of the composition, .DELTA.H.sub.i.sup.f is the heat of fusion (cal.mol.sup.-1), T.sub.i.sup.f is the melting point (K), T is the temperature (K), and R is the gas constant (cal.mol.sup.-1.K.sup.-1). Electrical capacitors prepared with these electrical insulating oil compositions provide excellent operation at temperatures as low as -40.degree. C., preferably as low as -50.degree. C.

An electrical insulating oil composition which comprises 45% by weight or more of at least 2 members selected from the group consisting of (a) m-ethylbiphenyl, (b) p-ethylbiphenyl, (c) o-benzyltoluene, (d) m-benzyltoluene, (e) p-benzyltoluene, and (f) 1,1-diphenylethane; and the remainder of non-condensed bicyclic aromatic hydrocarbons having not more than 17 carbon atoms besides the above 6 components; and is characterized in that, when the temperature of the composition is -40.degree.
