It is an object of the present invention to provide a high molecular weight compound that has excellent hole injection and transport performance, is capable of blocking electrons, and is highly stable as a thin film. It is another object of the present invention to provide an organic EL element that includes an organic layer (thin film) made of the above-described high molecular weight compound, wherein the organic EL element has high light emission efficiency and a long lifespan. The high molecular weight compound according to the present invention includes a repeating unit represented by a general formula (3), that is constituted by a specific triarylamine structural unit and a specific bonding structural unit, and has a weight average molecular weight of 10,000 or more and less than 1,000,000 on a polystyrene basis.

The present invention provides an indenocarbazole compound characterized by having hole transporting properties, being used as a constituent material of an organic electroluminescence device, and being represented by the following general formula (1), and an organic electroluminescence device having a pair of electrodes and at least one organic layer sandwiched therebetween is characterized in that the indenocarbazole compound is used as a constituent material of at least one organic layer. The indenocarbazole compound according to the present invention has (1) excellent hole transporting properties, (2) excellent electron blocking properties, (3) a stable thin film state, and excellent heat resistance. The organic electroluminescence device according to the present invention has a high light-emitting efficiency and high brightness.

A material for an organic electroluminescent device that is excellent in hole injection and transport abilities, electron blocking ability, stability in a thin film state, and durability is provided as a material for an organic electroluminescent device having high efficiency and high durability. Further, an organic electroluminescent device having low driving voltage, high efficiency, and a long lifetime is provided by combining the material with various materials for an organic EL device that is excellent in hole and electron injection and transport abilities, electron blocking ability, thin film stability, and durability, in such a manner that the characteristics of the materials can be effectively exhibited. The organic EL device of the present invention has an anode, a hole transport layer, a luminous layer, an electron transport layer, and a cathode in this order, and the hole transport layer contains an arylamine compound represented by the following general formula (1): 

An organic electroluminescent device having high luminous efficiency, low driving voltage, and particularly a long lifetime is provided by combining various materials for an organic electroluminescent device, which have excellent hole and electron injection/transport performances, electron blocking ability, stability in a thin-film state, and durability as materials for an organic electroluminescent device having high luminous efficiency and high durability so as to allow the respective materials to effectively reveal their characteristics. In the organic electroluminescent device having at least an anode, a hole transport layer, a light emitting layer, an electron transport layer and a cathode in this order, the hole transport layer includes an arylamine compound represented by the following general formula (1), and the light emitting layer includes an amine derivative of the following general formula (2) having a condensed ring structure. 

According to the present invention, there are provided pyrimidine derivatives represented by the following general formula (1). The pyrimidine derivatives of the invention are novel compounds and feature (1) good electron injection property, (2) high electron mobility, (3) excellent hole blocking property, (4) good stability in their form of thin films, and (5) excellent heat resistance.
