A honeycomb structure constituted by honeycomb segments, where a honeycomb segment has a first end and second end surfaces of a quadrangular shape; the second end surface having an area larger than that of the first one, a first pair of two side surfaces facing each other in parallel, and a second pair of two side surfaces facing each other make side surfaces become gradually narrow from the second end surface toward the first end surface, where a plurality of honeycomb segments are disposed in such a manner that the honeycomb segments are aligned to form rows in parallel in a predetermined direction, so as to make adjacent honeycomb segments directed opposite to each other in first end surfaces bonded to each other with one of side surfaces of the second pair of side surfaces.

Honeycomb structure

In each honeycomb segment, a first and a second end surfaces are rectangular shapes having the same dimension, and are in a positional relation in which extending directions of long sides of the respective end surfaces are perpendicular to each other, and (X&#x2212;Y)/2 is from 0.2 to 7 mm, where X is a length of each long side of each of the first and the second end surfaces, and Y is a length of each short side of each of the first and the second end surfaces. The honeycomb segment has two pairs of tapered side surfaces each of which including two side surfaces facing each other so that a distance between side surfaces becomes narrow from the first end surface toward the second end surface end, respectively.

Disclosed is a honeycomb structure that hardly generates ring cracks; the honeycomb structure includes a honeycomb basal body having porous partition walls defining a plurality of cells that become through channels of a fluid; and a ring-shaped convex portion being a ring of convex portion surrounding an outer periphery of the honeycomb basal body over the whole periphery; and the ring-shaped convex portion is disposed to project outwardly from the outer periphery of the honeycomb basal body and to cover a part of the outer periphery of the honeycomb basal body, the shapes of both end portions of the ring-shaped convex portion are tapered shape, and a thickness of the ring-shaped convex portion in a cross section perpendicular to an extending direction of the cells is from 3 to 20 mm.
