A dye composition for keratinous fibers which contains a coupler and a developer are disclosed. The present coupler component is a novel 2-alkoxy-3,5-diaminopyridine derivatives of the formula (1): ##STR1## wherein R1 and R2 are the same or different from each other and independently represent a hydrogen atom, a lower alkanoyl group or a lower alkyl group which may be substituted by at least one hydroxyl group, and R3 is a lower alkyl group which may be substituted by at least one hydroxyl group, or a salt thereof; provided that R1 and R2 are not both a hydrogen atom or an acetyl group at the same time. The present 2-alkoxy-3,5-diaminopyridine derivatives are useful as couplers in dye compositions, and are capable of dyeing keratinous fibers such as hair in a bright blue color with excellent dyeability. Dye compositions containing the present compounds as a coupler show excellent resistance to discoloration, excellent resistance to shampooing and excellent resistance to friction.

A keratinous fiber dye composition comprising a developer and a coupler, wherein the coupler is a 2-substituted amino-5-alkylphenol derivative represented by the following formula (1): ##STR1## wherein the all symbols are defined in the disclosure, is disclosed. The keratinous fiber dye composition imparts a color tone of a high chroma and is excellent in coloring power and fastness.

A dyeing composition for a keratin fiber which comprises 1,5-dihydroxynaphthalene as a coupling substance, 2-amino-5-hydroxybenzoic acid or a cosmetically acceptable salt thereof as a color developing substance, and a cosmetically acceptable base is disclosed. The dyeing composition for a keratin fiber give a vivid red color tone having a high chroma and an extremely high fastness.

A dye composition for keratinous fibers is disclosed. The composition comprises a developing substance and, as a coupling substance, a 3,5-diaminopyridine derivative of the following formula (I), ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is an alkoxy group or a group ##STR2## wherein R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 may be the same or different and individually represents a hydrogen atom or a hydroxyalkyl group, R.sup.4 a hydroxy, alkoxy, or hydroxyalkyl group, and n is a number of 1-4; or a salt thereof. The composition is capable of dyeing keratinous fibers such as hairs in blue color with a high vividness and with resistances to the light, color change, and discoloration due to shampooing.
