A film sheet which has a polymer layer formed of a coating solution is drawn from a balk roll and transported toward a rubbing apparatus. Thereby, first and second blowers sequentially disposed respectively apply to the polymer layer an air of temperature 45&#xb1;2&#xb0; C. and humidity 50%&#x2013;60%, and an air of temperature 25&#xb1;1&#xb0; C. and humidity 30%&#x2013;35%. Thus, damages which occurred in transporting and rolling the film sheet are removed. Thereafter, a rubbing action is performed to the film sheet such that the polymer layer has alignment. Then a liquid crystal layer is formed on the polymer layer, to obtain an optical compensation film.

A coating device for coating a coating solution on a web has a roller and a weir which partially constructs a solution store space. In the solution store space the coating solution is stored. When the web sequentially moves in a direction, the roller rotates and the solution in the solution store space is supplied on the web. Thereby a part of the solution overflows the weir such that another part of the solution may remain on the web to have a constant width in a widthwise direction of the web. A drying device has plural drying zones in which the web is fed after the coating of the coating solution. One of the drying zones is neighbored to the coating device. A top of the plural drying zones is constructed of a blow regulation member so as to confront to the solution on the web. The blow regulation member has holes through which is exhausted a gas evaporated from the layer of the solution on the web.

A process for preparing a continuous optical compensatory sheet has the continuous steps of: coating a liquid of a resin for forming an orientation layer in a solvent on a surface of a moving continuous transparent film; drying the coated layer to form a transparent resin layer; subjecting the transparent resin layer to rubbing treatment to give an orientation layer; coating a coating liquid of a discotic compound in a solvent on the orientation layer to form a coated layer; drying the coated layer; heating the coated layer to form a discotic nematic phase, whereby a layer of discotic compound is formed; and winding up the transparent film.
