The present invention provides an ink composition for an ink jet recording process, which exhibits excellent print quality with good water fastness and light fastness and without flying in deflected directions from the ink head or nozzle fill-in even after a prolonged ink jet printing. The ink comprises (1) a carbon black, (2) an organic pigment, (3) a dispersant incorporated in an aqueous medium and (4) a saccharide.

An ink composition for ink jet recording is described comprising a pigment, a resin dispersant, a thermoplastic resin emulsion and water, wherein the weight ratio of the pigment to the resin dispersant is from 20:1 to 5:2. The foregoing ink composition is little susceptible to irregular bleeding on a recording medium, undergoes no change in physical properties and jettability and no precipitation of solid matter and exhibits an excellent redispersibility.

In a transfer type ink jet recording system, a scanning is conducted on a transfer drum using a recording head to form ink dot strings. The recording head is moved in one subscanning direction with a fixed pitch so that ink drops are impacted to positions which are not adjacent to ink dot strings formed immediately before the current scanning step, whereby a repellent phenomenon is prevented from occurring. According to another aspect of the invention, the printing sequence is changed in accordance with the density of print data. A dot counter counts the number of printing dots of each of a plurality of writing blocks in a video memory. A controller decides the sequence of printing the printing blocks on the basis of the result, and transfers information indicative of the sequence of the printing blocks to a memory selector. In deciding the sequence, restriction is set so that adjacent blocks are not successively subjected to the printing step. The memory selector reads out printing data from a video memory on the basis of the sequence information, and transfers the data to a recording head.

An intermediate transfer ink jet recording method comprising forming an ink image on an intermediate transfer medium by ink jet recording and then transferring the ink image from the intermediate transfer medium onto a recording medium, which method enables an excellent image to be formed on the intermediate transfer medium and the image to be efficiently transferred from the intermediate transfer medium to the recording medium. The intermediate transfer ink jet recording method of the invention is characterized by ejecting an ink composition on an intermediate transfer medium carrying, on the surface thereof, a surfactant having an HLB value of 2 to 15 to form an ink image and transferring the ink image formed on the intermediate transfer medium to a recording medium.

A recording medium is provided which causes none of bleeding or feathering, cracking and whitening of a print and is suitably usable especially for ink jet recording. The recording medium, when used in a system where an image is viewed by taking advantage of transmitted light, such as a system using an OHP sheet, can realize a good image having high light transmittance and high brightness. The recording medium comprises a substrate bearing an ink-absorbent layer, the ink-absorbent layer being formed of a polymer complex of a basic polymer and a styrene/(meth)acrylic acid polymer, the mixing ratio of the basic polymer and the styrene/(meth)acrylic acid polymer being in the range of from 10:3.5 to 7.

An ink jet printer of the type in which an ink image is formed on an intermediate recording medium, and the ink image is transferred to a recording medium is disclosed. The ink jet printer includes heating means located near the intermediate recording medium. The heating direction of the heating means being set as desired. Control means is further included, which operates such that when the heating means heats the ink image formed on the intermediate recording medium, the heating direction of the heating means is set toward the intermediate recording medium at least one time, and when the heating means does not heat the intermediate recording medium, the heating direction of the heating means is put in the direction in which the heating means does not heat the recording head. A transfer type ink jet printer having an ink jet head for ejecting droplets of ink in which charged coloring particles have been dispersed in a solvent in the form of insulating carrier liquid having a low dielectric constant, a transfer medium for carrying and moving an ink image formed of ink droplets ejected from the head, and a pressure roller for transferring the ink image written to the transfer medium to a recording medium. By temporarily fixing the charged coloring particles in the ink image onto the transfer medium until the ink image is led to the transfer means after the ink image is formed on the transfer medium, good and high-speed image printing has been made possible without vapor generation, so that an excellent image free from any printing pattern is available at a low transfer pressure. There is also provided a unit for removing a solvent by making the solvent on the transfer medium with the charged coloring particles temporarily fixed by the means for temporarily fixing the particles contact water or a surface active aqueous liquid agent.
