An optical coupling device for coupling optical waveguide devices having different spot sizes to one another includes photonic crystal having a modulation structure having a refractive index periodic at about the same interval as the wavelength of light used by the optical waveguide devices. The use of the photonic crystal allows the spot size of light at the emitting end of the photonic crystal to be converted into a different size from the spot size at the incident end of the photonic crystal.

Disclosed herein is a self-waveguide optical circuit for forming optical paths by propagating rays or electromagnetic waves comprising: photonic crystals having a dielectric constant periodic structure or a dielectric constant semi-periodic structure having a period substantially corresponding to a wavelength of propagation rays, and optical paths formed by establishing a crystal direction of the photonic crystal to level the dispersion surface of the photonic crystal for obtaining a bundle of parallel rays. In accordance with the present invention, elevation of characteristics such as miniaturization, high integration, high speed operation and transmission efficiency can be obtained because a bundle of parallel rays can be obtained without forming crooked parts having an excessive curvature radius.

A wavelength dividing circuit which realizes improved device characteristics and performance, such as a small size, high speed and high transmission efficiency and which lends itself to improved integration degree. In order to control the polarization direction of laser light emitted by a vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL), the cross-sectional dimension of the p-DBR is so limited as to permit only a single fundamental transverse mode in a waveguide composed by the p-DBR. Some VCSEL-based devices are developed using arrays of VCSELs in which each VCSEL has a controlled direction of polarization.

The invention provides a semiconductor optical surface transmission device comprising a laser element and a photo-transistor element formed on a semiconductor substrate through which light transmissions are made.
