A process for producing carnitinamide which is an intermediate for production of L-carnitine is provided, which can hydrate carnitine nitrile to form carnitinamide with high selectivity, whereby highly-purified carnitinamide excellent as a substrate for stereoselective hydrolysis by optical resolution or a microorganism is produced in high yield. The process comprises hydrating carnitine nitrile to form carnitinamide using a catalyst containing a manganese oxide, and thus carnitinamide substantially free from by-produced carnitine is produced in high yield, so that carnitinamide of extremely high purity can be obtained through simple and easy crystallization operation.

Provided a process for producing higher content of trans 1,4-bis(aminomethyl)cyclohexane which is used as the raw material for producing polyamides or polyurethanes having physically and chemically excellent properties from 1,4-bis(aminomethyl)cyclohexane which is generally produced by hydrogenation of p-xylylenediamine. That is, a mixture of cis and trans 1,4-bis(aminomethyl)cyclohexane is isomerized by heating at 120 to 250.degree. C. in the presence of a platinum group catalyst to change to trans isomer. 1,4-bis(aminomethyl)cyclohexane containing more than 80% trans isomer is produced by combining this isomerization technique and crystallization technique.

An aromatic primary hydroperoxide is produced by oxidizing a methyl-substituted aromatic compound in a liquid phase with a molecular oxygen-containing gas at a temperature of 80.degree.-150.degree. C. under a pressure of the atmospheric to 100 kg/cm.sup.2 gage in the presence of 8-300 parts by weight of an aliphatic tertiary hydroperoxide per 100 parts by weight of the methyl-substituted aromatic compound. The oxidation reaction is promoted, an aromatic primary hydroperoxide content of the reaction products is increased, whereas by-products are reduced, and a selectivity to the aromatic primary hydroperoxide is considerably increased.
