The contacting state of the main shaft,and the housing,is detected through the presence of electric conductivity by a contact detection device,A contact decision device,determines the contact of the main shaft,with the housing,based on the detected conductivity, thus automatic and certain preventative measures, such as the main shaft of the machine tool stops and so on, are based on the above decision.

A main-shaft malfunction-state detector in an air bearing type machine tool, in which an abnormal contact of a main shaft with a housing is reliably and automatically detected. The contacting state of the main shaft 11 and the housing 13 is detected through the presence of electric conductivity by a contact detection means 31. A contact decision means 32 determines the contact of the main shaft 11 with the housing 13 based on the detected conductivity, thus automatic and certain preventative measures, such as the main shaft of the machine tool stops and so on, are based on the above decision.

A feed pulse signal for driving the load is added to a deviation of a present position signal detected of the load from a commanded position signal dependent on the polarity of the deviation. The deviation of the added feed pulse signal from the present position signal of the load is determined, and a drive signal for driving the load is derived from a deviation signal indicative of the last-mentioned deviation. In an apparatus which measures an area factor of an image portion of an image-bearing member, such as a printing plate used in an offset press, having image and non-image portions with different reflectivities, a single light source and a single photoelectric conversion element are used for measuring reflected light from the image-bearing member by optically scanning the image-bearing member. An arithmetic operation unit is provided so that the reflected light data are measured on the basis of electrical signals from the photoelectric conversion element each time a light beam moves for a unit distance in the X axis direction of the image-bearing member, and the corresponding reflected light data are added in the Y axis direction to obtain area data for each unit region in the X axis direction. In the offset press, an area factor of an image portion for each ink control zone of the press is calculated on the basis of the area data for the respective unit regions and the quantity of ink for each ink control zone is thus controlled.
