A fuel cell has an anode, a cathode, and a polymer electrolyte membrane placed between the anode and the cathode. The anode includes a catalyst which is composed of binary or ternary particulates deposited on a carbon support. The particulate is represented by a general formula: Pt&#x2014;P, wherein Ru is optionally present. The content of P is in a range of 2 mol % to 50 mol % based on the total moles of Pt or Pt&#x2014;Ru. The diameter of the catalyst particulates is in range from 1 to 3 nm.

A fuel cell includes a fuel electrode, an oxygen electrode, and a polymer electrolyte membrane placed between the fuel electrode and the oxygen electrode. The fuel electrode and/or the oxygen electrode include a catalyst composed of a particle containing at least Pt and P and a carbon support.

It is an object of the invention to supply an optical communication device and an optical communication module that are provided with a substrate, a vertical waveguide that is formed in the substrate and that is for transmitting light in a thickness direction of the substrate, a horizontal waveguide that is formed in the substrate and that is for transmitting light in a planar direction of the substrate, and a light bending portion for optically coupling the vertical waveguide and the horizontal waveguide. The substrate is a laminated body including a first substrate in whose surface a groove is formed and in which a reflective mirror is disposed on at least one end of the groove, and a second substrate layered to the surface of the first substrate in which the groove is formed and in which a through hole located in opposition to the portion of the groove in which the reflective mirror is disposed is formed. The horizontal waveguide includes a cavity formed by the groove and a reflective film that covers the wall surfaces of the cavity, and transmits light through its cavity. The vertical waveguide include a cavity formed by the through hole and a reflective film that covers the wall surfaces of the cavity, and transmits light through its cavity. The light bending portion includes the reflective mirror, and due to reflection at the surface of the reflective mirror, the light transmission direction is changed from the thickness direction to the planar direction of the substrate or from the planar direction to the thickness direction of the substrate.

A novel method for preparing fine particles comprising a transition metal and a noble metal which are monodispersed and have almost no particle diameter distribution, and are transferable to a CuAu-I type L1ordered phase, with safety and at a low cost, wherein a salt or a complex of at least one transition metal selected from Fe and Co and a salt or a complex of at least one transition metal selected from Pt and Pd (exclusive of the combination of Co&#x2014;Pd) is dissolved in an organic solvent miscible with water or an alcohol in the presence of an organic protecting agent, and the resultant solution is heated under reflux in the presence of an alcohol in an inert atmosphere, to thereby prepare a binary alloy comprising a transition metal and a noble metal, or a salt or a complex of at least one element selected from the group consisting of Cu, Bi, Sb, Sn, Pb and Ag is further dissolved in the above solvent and the resultant solution is heated under reflux in the presence of an alcohol in an inert atmosphere, to thereby prepare a ternary alloy comprising a transition metal, a noble metal and an additional element.

Metal alloy fine particles and method for producing thereof

The present invention provides an optical recording medium which is inhibited or prevented from sticking of lubricants onto a light emitting face of a solid immersion lens. The optical recording medium of the present invention comprises a substrate and, provided thereon in succession, a reflective layer , a recording layer , a protective layer and a lubricating layer . The lubricating layer is heated and/or irradiated with ultraviolet rays to adjust the lubricant bonding rate to at least 60%, thereby to reduce the amount of physical adsorptive lubricant contained in the lubricating layer . As a result, when recording and reproduction are carried out using a floating type optical head provided with a solid immersion lens, the lubricant hardly sticks to the light emitting face of the solid immersion lens. The lubricant bonding rate can be enhanced to 80% or more by rinsing the lubricating layer with a solvent after the heating and/or the irradiation with ultraviolet rays.

A magneto-optical recording medium comprises, on a substrate, a reflective layer, a first dielectric layer, a recording layer, and a second dielectric layer successively in this order, for being irradiated with a recording or reproducing light beam coming from a side of the second dielectric layer. A diamond-like carbon layer as a self-lubricating layer is formed on the second dielectric layer. An optical head comprises a floating type slider installed with a solid immersion lens. A protective film having a self-lubricating property may be also formed on a bottom surface of the slider opposing to the optical recording medium. Even when the floating position of the optical head is varied, and the optical head contacts with the surface of the optical recording medium, then the sliding scratch scarcely occurs, because the optical head smoothly glides on the recording medium surface. A lubricating layer may be further formed on the self-lubricating layer.

A cavity surface-forming plate of a mold for injection-molding a plastic substrate is coarsely polished, and then a surface for defining a cavity is applied with electroless Ni&mdash;P plating. The surface of the plating is polished with abrasive grains to obtain surface roughness of Ra&lE;2.0 nm and Rmax&lE;22 nm. The plastic substrate molded with the mold has smoothness equivalent to the polished plating surface. A concave-convex pattern for forming pits may be formed on the cavity surface. A magnetic disk or an optical disk provided with the substrate makes it possible to realize the near contact system for a magnetic or magneto-optical head. Thus, it is possible to realize high density recording.

The present invention provides a magnetic recording medium with distinguished SNR and mechanical characteristics, which comprises an underlayer, a ferromagnetic thin film metallic layer and a protective film layer successively and continuously laminated on a non-magnetic resin substrate, where (A) at least one layer selected from the group consisting of an Si layer, an Si.sub.w N.sub.x C.sub.y O.sub.z layer and an Al.sub.w N.sub.x C.sub.y O.sub.z layer and (B) at least one layer selected from the group consisting of silicides, nitrides, oxides or their mixtures of Ti, Ta, Mo, V, Zr and their alloys are laminated on the non-magnetic resin substrate in the order of (A) and (B) or (i) a layer composed of at least one material selected from the group consisting of Ti, Ta, Mo, V, Zr, Nb and their alloys, (ii) at least one layer selected from the group consisting of an Si layer, an Si.sub.w N.sub.x C.sub.y O.sub.z layer and an Al.sub.w N.sub.x C.sub.y O.sub.z layer (where w+x+y+z=100 at. %, w.gtoreq.30 at. %, 0 .ltoreq.z.ltoreq.50 at. % and x+y.gtoreq.20 at. %), and (iii) a layer composed of at least one material selected from the group consisting of Ti, Ta, Mo, V, Zr and their alloys are laminated on the non-magnetic resin substrate in the order of (i), (ii) and (iii), between the non-magnetic resin substrate and the underlayer.

An organic compound of the formula: R.sub.1 --Z.sub.1 --R.sub.3 --Z.sub.2 --R.sub.2 in which R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 represent a linear, branched or cyclic saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon group, a polyether group, a polyester group, a polyamide group or a polycarbonate group; Z.sub.1 and Z.sub.2 represent an amide bond, an ether bond, a urethane bond, a urea bond or an amine salt bond formed by a reaction between an acid and an amine; and R.sub.3 is a group of the formula: --(CH.sub.2).sub.x --(CF.sub.2).sub.y --(CH.sub.2).sub.z in which x and z are an integer of 1 to 4, and y is an integer of 4 to 34 which is useful as a lubricant to be used, for example in a magnetic recording medium.

A magnetic recording medium comprising alumite made by anodic oxidation of aluminum or an aluminum alloy and comprising fine pores in which a ferromagnetic material is filled, wherein an in-plane remanence is at least 2.5 times greater than a perpendicular remanence and a magnetic recording medium of the above alumite, wherein the magnetic material is at least one material selected from the group consisting of Fe or Co, alloy mainly composed of Fe or Co, an Co or Fe containing a P element, and an alloy mainly composed of Co or Fe and containing the P element.

Provided according to the present invention are a perpendicular magnetic recording medium filled with a magnetic metal containing Fe as a main component in the fine pores of an alumite formed by anodic oxidation of a surface of an Al or Al alloy substrate, the particles of Fe in the filled magnetic metal being crystallographically discontinuous, and a process for the production thereof.
