A cutting tool made of diamond-coated cemented carbide includes: a tool body made of tungsten carbide-based cemented carbide including: 3 to 15 mass % of Co; at least one of TaC and NbC of which a total amount is 0.1 to 3.0 mass %; and a balance including WC; and a diamond film coating the tool body, the tool body has a plurality of protrusions on a surface of the tool body, an upper portion of each of the protrusions is made of the at least one of TaC and NbC, and a lower portion of each of the protrusions is made of WC and Co, the lower portion being under the upper portion.

Cutting tool made of diamond-coated cemented carbide and method for producing the same

A method of manufacturing a surface-coated cutting tool includes: forming an aluminum oxide layer having a layer thickness of 0.05 to 5 &#x3bc;m and an &#x3b1;-alumina structure with a corundum type crystal structure on a cutting tool body using a sol-gel method. The step of forming includes adding an alcohol to aluminum alkoxide; adding an acid; stirring the mixture at 10&#xb0; C. or lower to form a sol; applying the sol on a surface of the cutting tool body or an outer-most surface of a hard-coating layer formed on the surface of the cutting tool body; performing a drying process at least once, the applied sol being dried at 100 to 400&#xb0; C. in the drying process; and annealing the cutting tool body with a dried sol layer at 500 to 1000&#xb0; C.

Method of manufacturing surface-coated cutting tool with excellent abrasion resistance

A cutting tool made of surface-coated cubic boron nitride-based ultrahigh pressure sintered material, comprising a cutting insert main body formed by ultrahigh pressure sintering of compact composed of titanium nitride, aluminum and/or aluminum oxide, and boron nitride, and a hard coating layer vapor deposited on the main body. The main body has a texture containing cubic boron nitride, titanium nitride and reaction product. The hard coating layer has a lower layer of composite nitride having a composition of [TiAl]N, where X is in a range from 0.40 to 0.60 in an atomic ratio, and the upper layer comprises a thin layer A having the composition of [TiAl]N, where X is in a range from 0.40 to 0.60 in an atomic ratio, and a thin layer B consisting of a Ti nitride (TiN). The upper layer has a consisting of the thin layer A and a thin layer B layered alternately.

Cutting tool made of surface-coated cubic boron nitride-based ultrahigh pressure sintered material

A cutting tool made of a surface-coated cubic boron nitride-based ultra-high-pressure sintered material, comprising a cutting insert main body formed by ultra-high-pressure sintering of a compact composed of titanium nitride, aluminum and/or aluminum oxide, and boron nitride, and a hard coating layer vapor deposited on the main body. The main body has a texture containing cubic boron nitride, titanium nitride and reaction product. The hard coating layer has a lower layer of nitride having a composition of [TiAlSi]N, where X is in a range from 0.40 to 0.60 and Y is in a range from 0.02 to 0.10 in an atomic ratio, and the upper layer comprises a thin layer A having the composition of [TiAlSi]N, where X is in a range from 0.40 to 0.60 in an atomic ratio and Y is in a range from 0.02 to 0.10, and a thin layer B consisting of a Ti nitride (TiN). The upper layer consists of the thin layer A and a thin layer B layered alternately.

Cutting tool made of surface-coated cubic boron nitride-based ultra-high-pressure sintered material

A coated cutting tool member exhibiting not only a superior wear resistance during a high speed cutting operation in which a significant amount of heat is generated, but also exhibit a superior shipping resistance even when such a cutting operation is performed under severe conditions, such as with a large depth of cut or a large feed. In the coated cutting tool member, a hard coating layer of one of nitride compound and carbonitride compound containing Ti and Al is formed using a physical vapor deposition method at an average thickness of 1 to 10 &#x3bc;m, and the hard coating layer includes Zr at an atomic ratio of 0.002 to 0.1, and at least one of Y and Ce at an atomic ratio of 0.0005 to 0.05 in a coexistence state.

Coated cutting tool member

The invention provides a coated cutting tool made of cemented carbide in which a hard coating layer has excellent wear resistance in high-speed cutting operation, wherein (a) a crystal orientation hysteresis layer which consists of a carbonitride compound layer and (b) a hard coating layer which consists of a layer of nitride compound and has a well defined crystal orientation and/or degree of crystallinity are formed on the surface of a cemented carbide substrate, preferably on the surface of a tungsten carbide based cemented carbide or titanium carbonitride based cermet by physical vapor deposition, wherein the crystal orientation hysteresis layer is deposited between the surface of a cemented carbide substrate and the hard coating layer. In one specific example, (a1) the carbonitride compound layer has an average thickness of 0.05 to 0.5 &#x3bc;m and is preferably a Ti&#x2014;Al carbonitride compound layer expressed by the composition formula as (TiAl)(NC), wherein X ranges from 0.05 to 0.20 and Y ranges from 0.01 to 0.15 by atomic ratio and (b1) the nitride compound layer has an average thickness of 2 to 15 &#x3bc;m and is preferably a Ti&#x2014;Al nitride compound layer expressed by the composition formula as (TiAl)N, wherein Z ranges from 0.45 to 0.65 by atomic ratio. In another specific example, (a2) the carbonitride compound layer has an average thickness of 0.05 to 0.5 &#x3bc;m and is preferably a Ti&#x2014;Al carbonitride compound layer expressed by the composition formula as (TiAl)(NC), wherein X ranges from 0.01 to 0.15 and Y ranges from 0.01 to 0.15 by atomic ratio and (b2) the nitride compound layer has an average thickness of 2 to 10 &#x3bc;m and is preferably a Al&#x2014;Ti&#x2014;Si nitride compound layer expressed by the composition formula as (AlTiSi)N, wherein A ranges from 0.35 to 0.55 and B ranges from 0.05 to 0.20 by atomic ratio.

Surface coated cemented carbide cutting tool having hard coating layer exhibiting excellent wear resistance in high speed machining

A surface-coated cutting tool member exhibiting a superior tool life due to a hard coating layer thereof is provided. The surface-coated cutting tool member includes a tungsten carbide based cemented carbide substrate, a titanium carbonitride based cermet substrate, or a cubic boron nitride based sintered substrate; and a hard coating layer of a nitride compound containing titanium and yttrium, which is formed on a surface of the substrate using a physical vapor deposition method in an overall average thickness of 1 to 15 &#x3bc;m. The hard coating layer has a component concentration profile in which maximum Y component containing points (minimum Ti component containing points) and points without Y component (TiN points) appear alternatingly and repeatedly at a predetermined interval in a direction of thickness of the hard coating layer, and the amount of contained Y component is continuously changed from the maximum Y component containing points to the points without Y component and from the points without Y component to the maximum Y component containing points, the maximum Y component containing points satisfy a composition formula of (TiY)N (where X indicates an atomic ratio of 0.005 to 0.15), and a distance between one of the maximum Y component containing points and adjacent one of the points without Y component is from 0.01 to 0.1 &#x3bc;m.
