In an image display device including a backlight () divided into multiple regions, color shift information (CSR, CSB) is generated from a light source control value (BL(i,j)) for each region, the region to which a pixel of interest belongs and regions therearound are taken as reference regions, luminance conversion information is generated from the light source control value for each reference region, color conversion information is generated from the color shift information for each reference region, and an image signal is converted based on the color conversion information and luminance conversion information, so that an output image signal is generated. Even when there is light leakage from a peripheral region, it is possible to perform color correction so that the color difference is not noticeable at a region boundary portion.

An image display device includes a panel in a curved surface shape that lets through and reflects light, a first display unit that displays a first image based on first image data that reaches a predetermined position through the panel, a second display unit that displays a second image based on second image data that is reflected by the panel and reaches the predetermined position, a position information acquisition unit that acquires position information indicating a position of an actual viewpoint of an observer, and an image processing unit that determines a scaling factor of the second image data for each scan line based on the position information and performs a scaling process for each scan line on the second image data to be inputted to the second display unit.

Based on a histogram of saturation of an input video, a saturation conversion function is determined, and, referring to the determined saturation conversion function, the saturation of each pixel of the input video is converted. Alternatively, a saturation conversion coefficient determination function is generated from the histogram, a saturation conversion coefficient is determined from the saturation conversion coefficient determination function and the saturation, and color differences are multiplied by the determined saturation conversion coefficient. Regardless of what saturation distribution the input video has, the saturation can be properly enhanced, and at the same time a high gradation expression can be obtained.

A maximum value Yimax and a minimum value Yimin of input pixel data Ri, Gi, Bi for each pixel are determined. A saturation adjustment value X is determined using a function g(Yimax, Yimin), white pixel data Wo is determined using a function f(Yimin), and these are used to determine output pixel data Ro, Go, Bo. Even the saturation represented by RGB three-color data is high, conversion to RGBW four-color data with improved brightness can be made, without changing the hue.

In the image processors and the image processing methods of the present invention, the number of bits for quantizing image data is adjusted on the basis of a dynamic range of each block. Therefore, the error introduced by encoding is reduced without increasing the data amount of the encoded image data, and the response speed of a liquid crystal can be controlled appropriately by preventing unnecessary voltages from being applied due to the error introduced by encoding.

A stereoscopic image display device includes a liquid crystal panel section, a light source section, a light detection section, a light source control section, a shutter glasses section, and a timing generation section generating a light emission drive signal, a light detection gate signal, and shutter switching signals in synchronization with an image synchronization signal. The timing generation section, generates the light emission drive signal which causes each of the regions of the light source section to emit light in accordance with scanning performed in the liquid crystal panel section, and which causes all the regions of the light source section to emit light in a predetermined period, and generates the light detection gate signal which enables detection of the light detection section in the predetermined period, and generates the shutter switching signals for switching left and right shutters to a non-transmissive mode.

Stereoscopic image display device

A light source portion includes a plurality of back lights provided corresponding to respective regions obtained by virtually dividing a liquid crystal panel screen into a plurality of parts, the back lights have a light emission intensity controlled based on a light emission intensity value and have ON and OFF operations controlled in response to a light emission driving signal, and the light emission driving signal is constituted to sequentially turn ON the plurality of back lights synchronously with a stereoscopic image signal and to turn ON the plurality of back lights at the same time in a predetermined timing, and is constituted to individually control a light emission period for the plurality of back lights based on image information about the stereoscopic image signal.

An image processing apparatus has an image analyzer including a feature detector, a feature combiner, and a resolution discrimination signal generator. For each pixel in a prescribed area of an input image, the feature detector outputs a representative difference value obtained from the pixel values of pixels positioned, with reference to that pixel, at prescribed intervals. The feature combiner outputs a combined feature value obtained from the representative difference values obtained for each pixel in the described area. The resolution discrimination signal generator outputs a resolution discrimination signal obtained from the combined feature value. The resolution discrimination signal has a monotonic non-decreasing relationship to the combined feature value. The resolution discrimination signal indicates an extent to which the input image includes signal components with frequencies equal to or greater than a particular frequency determined by the prescribed intervals.

Image processing apparatus

An image processing device includes an edge-enhancing image enlarger that converts an input image to a high-resolution image with edge enhancement. A difference calculator determines differences between the high-resolution image and the input image. A high-resolution image corrector corrects the high-resolution image by diffusing the differences to pixels of the high-resolution image, thereby generating a corrected image in which edges are enhanced without image degradation in textured areas.

A light emission control device includes a partial region feature quantity detector, an enlarged region feature quantity detector, a whole screen feature quantity detector, and a light emission controller. The partial region feature quantity detector detects a feature quantity of the image as a partial region feature quantity. The enlarged region feature quantity detector defines the partial region of interest and the partial regions neighboring the partial region of interest, and detects a feature quantity of the image of the enlarged region. The whole screen feature quantity detector detects this feature quantity as a whole screen feature quantity. On the basis of the partial region feature quantity and the enlarged region feature quantity pertaining to the partial region of interest, and the whole screen feature quantity, the light emission controller controls the light emission luminance of the light emission unit corresponding to the partial region of interest.

An image display device and an image display method are provided so as to suppress consumption power and provide a more brightly colored display image. The image display device is provided with a light modulating means wherein image data is inputted and an image is formed by modulating light from a light source based on the image data. The image display device is also provided with a color information detecting means for detecting a quantity of a chromatic color component of an image expressed by the image data; a light source control data generating means for generating light source control data for controlling brightness of the light source; and a light source control means for controlling the brightness of the light source based on the light source control data.

A maximum and minimum color information detector detects a maximum color-signal gradation level or a value equivalent to the maximum gradation level and a minimum color-signal gradation level or a value equivalent to the minimum gradation level as color information for an image signal input to the image processing apparatus, a correction parameter generator sets correction parameters according to the color information about the input image signal, and a gradation corrector corrects the gradation scale of each color component of the input image signal according to the correction parameters. Contrast can thereby be improved without excessive color collapse.

An image processing apparatus enhances contrast without producing color balance distortion or color collapse by generating a gradation-scale correction table from a distribution of a characteristic quantity of an input image signal, using the gradation-scale correction table to derive a gradation correction parameter for each pixel from a maximum component value of the pixel, and multiplying all components of the pixel by the gradation correction parameter.

A block noise detector has a spatial difference calculator that calculates differences between values of adjacent pixels. A spatial difference comparator detects edges by comparing the calculated differences. Eight counters count edges detected at different groups of positions spaced eight pixels apart in each horizontal line. The maximum count and the group of positions at which it occurs are detected at the end of each horizontal line to detect block noise and the positions of the block boundaries. The block noise detector is small in size because it only has to count edges in one line at a time, and detects edges accurately by comparing the difference at a given position separately with differences to the left and differences to the right.
