A waterproof cover has a first cover portion made of a waterproof material for removable connection to and covering a part of a device that has a recording portion for performing recording on a recording medium that is dischargeable from the device. A second cover portion is made of a flexible waterproof material for covering the device and for removable connection to the first cover portion to form an opening portion through which the recording medium passes when discharged from the device. Connecting members removably connect the second cover portion to the first cover portion. Positioning members position the second cover portion relative to the first cover portion prior to connection of the second cover portion to the first cover portion by the connecting member.

A thermal printer has a thermal head mounted on a case main body and a platen roller confronting the thermal head. A cover member mounted to the case main body undergoes swinging movement to open and close an opening of the case main body. A slider rotatably supports the platen roller and is mounted to the cover member for linear movement on a plane including a rotational center of the platen roller and a swing center of the cover member. Engagement pieces mounted to the slider engage with engagement portions of the case main body when the cover member closes the opening of the case main body and the platen roller confronts the thermal head. A biasing member biases the slider such that the engagement pieces engage with the engagement portions of the case main body and the platen roller is brought into pressure contact with the thermal head.

Provided is a printer that employs a platen roller as conveying means, for which the accuracy of the assembly of the constituents of a drive transmission mechanism that drives a platen roller is increased, and the heat releasing function of a motor that is a drive source is also improved, so that downsizing and increasing output can be coped with. Therefore, according to the present invention, a printer comprises: a platen roller, for conveying a recording sheet, a print head, arranged opposite the platen roller, a drive unit, for rotating the platen roller, and a main frame, including a pair of side walls that can rotatably support the platen roller, wherein the drive unit includes: a motor; idler gears, for transmitting a rotational force provided by the motor to the platen roller; and a gear fitting member, integrally formed with gear support shafts that support the idler gears, wherein the motor and idler gears are capable of being mounted in the main frame while attached to the gear fitting member, and wherein a drive gear of the motor and the idler gears are stored in a space defined by the gear fitting member and one of the side walls of the main frame.

A self-water-dispersible thermoplastic resin is swollen using an organic solvent having a boiling point lower than 100&#xb0; C., which does not dissolve but can swell the self-water-dispersible thermoplastic resin, to produce a swollen material and the resulting swollen material is dispersed into an aqueous medium in the form of microparticles to produce an initial aqueous dispersion, and then the organic solvent is removed from the initial aqueous dispersion to prepare a dispersion. A toner for electrophotography contains microparticles obtained by separating microparticles of the self-water-dispersible thermoplastic resin from the aqueous dispersion of thermoplastic resin microparticles and drying the microparticles.
