A liquid crystal panel includes a first substrate and on which pixel electrodes are formed in a matrix pattern, a second substrate on which a counter electrode is formed, an ultraviolet reducing layer formed on one of the first and second substrate corresponding to the matrix pattern of the pixel electrodes, and a polymer dispersion liquid crystal layer sandwiched between the first and second substrates. The liquid crystal layer is cured by irradiating ultraviolet light from the side on which the ultraviolet reducing layer is formed. The polymer dispersion liquid crystal layer is arranged between the counter electrode and each pixel electrode has an average liquid crystal drop diameter which is larger than that arranged in other areas.

Liquid crystal panel with reducing means, manufacturing method therefore and projection display apparatus using the same

In a display device, counter electrodes are formed in stripes at a position facing pixel electrodes, with a polymer dispersion liquid crystal held between the counter electrodes and pixel electrodes. When a positive-polarity signal is to be impressed to a pixel electrode, a negative-polarity voltage is fed to the counter electrode. On the other hand, when a negative-polarity signal is to be impressed to a pixel electrode, a positive-polarity voltage is added to the counter electrode. In this manner of impression voltages, a high voltage can be applied to the polymer dispersion liquid crystal layer on the pixel electrodes, so that the liquid crystal layer is turned into the transmitting state even if it is thick. Accordingly, the scattering efficiency is improved and images are displayed with high contrast as the liquid crystal layer can be made thick. If the thick transparent substrate is bonded to the counter substrate having the counter electrodes thereon, the light scattered at the liquid crystal layer is reflected by the counter substrate and returned back to the liquid crystal layer, thus eliminating the light to be scattered again.

Display device and projection-type display apparatus using the device

A liquid crystal display device comprises a light source, a diffusion plate for diffusing light beams emitted from the light source, and a liquid crystal panel for forming an image thereon as a result of a variation in scattering efficiency wherein the diffusion plate and liquid crystal panel are separately arranged with a distance between them, thereby the liquid crystal panel being illuminated by the diffused light beams uniformly, and a liquid crystal projection display device further comprises a color separator, a light deflector, a projector lens assembly and apertures having a shape similar to an image of the light source formed near the pupil of the projector lens assembly.

Liquid crystal display device and liquid crystal projection display

A liquid crystal displaying apparatus, a projection displaying apparatus, and a view finder apparatus using the liquid crystal displaying apparatus, are disclosed. Polarizing plates are disposed on the incident side and the outgoing side of a liquid crystal cell so that a twisted nematic liquid crystal is arranged to become approximately 90.degree. in twist angle between two transparent substrates having a picture element electrode. A direction of a phase advancing axis of the phase difference plate with respect to the polarized light axis of the polarizing plate on the incident side is set so that the transmission index of the optical head from the polarizing plate on the incident side to the polarizing plate on the outgoing side may become minimum when a given voltage for black displaying operation is applied on the liquid crystal cell and the light is inputted from the given direction.

Liquid crystal display apparatus and projection displaying apparatus

A liquid crystal panel includes first and second substrates at least one of which has a light transmission property and which confront each other, first and second electrode layers which are formed on opposed faces of the first and second substrates, respectively, a polymer dispersion liquid crystal layer which is sandwiched between the first and second substrates, and a layer which is formed on at least one of the first and second electrode layers and has an uneven sectional shape so as to define concavities. At least liquid crystals disposed in the concavities of the layer are aligned in a predetermined direction.

Polymer dispersed liquid crystal projector with diffraction gratings

A layer having an irregular sectional surface is formed on the surface of at least one of a pixel electrode and confronting electrode of a liquid crystal layer so as to confront a liquid crystal layer. The liquid crystal layer is formed of a polymer dispersed liquid crystal. If the layer having an irregular sectional surface is formed in a convex and concave pattern regularly and cyclically, the thus formed layer serves as a diffraction grating. When the liquid crystal is in an OFF condition, the refractive index n of the diffraction grating is different from the refractive index of the liquid crystal layer. As a result, an incident light to the liquid crystal panel is scattered and at the same time, diffracted. When the liquid crystal in in an ON condition, there is no difference in the refractive index between the diffraction grating and the liquid crystal, and the incident light passes straight through. Using the liquid crystal panel as a light valve, the light from a light source is incident to the liquid crystal panel, and the image formed on the liquid crystal panel is projected through a projection lens onto a screen. In the case of a black display, the incident light is scattered or diffracted in the liquid crystal panel according to the projected image. The scattered or diffracted light is stopped by a light shielding part of a aperture, and thus does not arrive at the screen.
