The main object of the invention is to provide an electromagnetic wave resonator making use of surface waves: an electromagnetic wave resonator structure capable of being achieved with existing technologies yet without much difficulty and applying voltage to a positive dielectric area, thereby overcoming a variety of problems arising from the fact that only thermal excitation is available. The contact structure of negative dielectric/positive dielectric/negative dielectric necessary for this type of electromagnetic wave resonator is provided on the surface of the negative dielectric materialjust as the coaxial structure of the positive dielectric thin filmextending in the Y-axis direction and the negative dielectric materialreceived therein is cut in the axial direction. This makes sure both negative dielectric materialsandwith the positive dielectric thin filmsandwiched between them are electrically insulated so that voltage can be applied to the positive dielectric thin film, and ensures that an area provided in the negative dielectric materialto receive the positive dielectric thin filmhas an aspect ratio D/Pof about 1.9, a figure well achievable in the state of the art.

Electromagnetic wave resonator and its fabrication process as well as electromagnetic wave generator

The present invention provides an electromagnetic wave resonator that is capable of showing surface wave resonance typically as outstanding plasmon resonance and can be manufactured industrially with excellent reproducibility and efficiency by combining currently available microprocessing technologies. The electromagnetic wave resonator of the present invention includes a first negative dielectric surface, a second negative dielectric surface and a positive dielectric thin film disposed between the first and the second negative dielectric surfaces. The positive dielectric thin film has an end face having an electromagnetic wave introduced therefrom. Intensity of the electromagnetic wave having a predetermined wavelength and being introduced from the end face is enhanced in the electromagnetic wave resonator due to resonance of a surface wave having an electric field component in a direction of film thickness of the positive dielectric thin film and without having a cut-off frequency.

There is provided an infrared light source that has a simple structure and radiates infrared rays polarized in a specific direction and having a specific wavelength. The infrared light source () comprises a heat generator () and a latticework () in which a dielectric part () and a metal part () are alternately formed at a constant pitch in a constant direction. The infrared rays are radiated in a direction perpendicular to the surface of the latticework and are polarized in the direction indicated by an arrow A. If the constant pitch is denoted by P, the width of the dielectric part in the constant direction by T, and the specific wavelength by &#x3bb;, for arbitrary P and T that meet the inequalities 0&#x3c;P&#x2266;2.0&#x3bb; and T&#x2266;0.5P, the depth D of the latticework is so selected that the intensity spectrum of the infrared rays radiated from the infrared light source has the peak at &#x3bb;.
