In one embodiment of the present invention, a sample target that allows ionization of a substance whose molecular weight is so high as to exceed 10000 in mass spectrometry that ionizes a sample without using matrix, a method for producing the same and a mass spectrometer using the sample target. The sample target includes a sample support surface including a large number of fine pores on its face receiving irradiated laser light. Each of the fine pores has a diameter of 30 nm or more and 5 &#x3bc;m or less. The number indicative of pore depth/(pore cycle&#x2212;pore diameter) of each of the fine pores is 2 or more and 50 or less. The face of the sample support surface is coated with metal or semiconductor.

A method for producing a porous diamond according to the present invention comprises steps of forming an anodized alumina layer, which functions as a mask, on a diamond substrate; and performing a plasma etching treatment to form pores on the diamond substrate, which pores have the same arrangement as those of the anodized alumina mask.

A method of producing a needle-like diamond structure including the steps of forming a layer of anodized alumina on a diamond substrate, the anodized alumina having a plurality of through holes; vapor-depositing a substance resistant to plasma etching by a vacuum vapor-depositing method to form dots on said diamond substrate, wherein the layer of anodized alumina acts as a mask for the vapor deposition; removing the anodized alumina; and performing a plasma etching treatment while using the dots as a mask, thereby forming regularly-arranged, needle-like diamond columns.
