Disclosed is an electronic device which is formed thin while maintaining good display by a liquid crystal display unit. Specifically disclosed is an electronic device wherein a main substrate () mounted with an electronic component is so arranged as to face a reflecting sheet () which is formed on the back surface of a liquid crystal display unit (). A flexible substrate () arranged between the liquid crystal display unit () and the main substrate () is connected to a surface () of the main substrate (), which surface () is on the side of the reflecting sheet (). A protective sheet () covering the reflecting sheet () is interposed between the flexible substrate () and the reflecting sheet ().

A problem of this invention is to satisfy both of securement of visibility of a display unit and suppression of noises at the time of a telephone call etc. using a receiver and a microphone. In a portable terminal apparatus which relates to the invention, a control unit () judges whether a handsfree device () is connected or not, on the occasion that a telephone call operation is carried out by an operation unit () and a voice telephone call operation by a telephone call circuit () and a transmission/receiving unit () is started, and in case that the handsfree device () is not connected, it is judged that a user is making a telephone call by use of a receiver () and a microphone () in an apparatus main body in such a state that he puts an apparatus casing to his ear part, and at least one of a drive system, drive frequency of a display unit () which comprises a liquid crystal display is changed, and a drive operation giving priority over acoustic characteristics is carried out. On one hand, in case that the handsfree device () is connected, a drive operation with high picture quality giving priority over optical characteristics of the display unit () is carried out without changing the drive system etc.

If a received signal includes a message signal following the address of the pager concerned, a decoder section decodes the message signal and a control section stores it in a memory section together with a reception time. At this time, the control section judges whether the message signal includes a sender identification code or a consecutive transmission code. If either code exists, the control section stores it in the memory section together with the message. The control section reads message data from the memory section, and a display control section controls a display section to display the message. If the message includes a sender identification code or a continuous transmission code, the control section searches for messages to be displayed together with the current message from among the other messages stored in the memory section, and the display control section controls the display section to display the found messages en bloc.

A wireless selective calling receiver and an external registering device are connected to each other through a signal transmitting line . Optional character or pattern data inputted by the external registering device are converted into electrical signal data in the external registering device , and outputted to the wireless selective calling receiver . The character or pattern data which have been converted into the electrical signal data are applied through the signal transmitting line to the control section of the wireless selective calling receiver , and are stored in the memory section of the wireless selective calling receiver or directly stored in the memory section of the wireless selective calling receiver from the external registering device , whereby optional character or pattern data inputted by the external registering device can be newly registered in the memory section in the wireless selective calling receiver
