An alkaline storage battery including a strip-shaped porous metal substrate and a material mixture filled into the substrate. The substrate has an unfilled portion where the material mixture is not filled along at least one of two longitudinal sides of the substrate. The substrate has a weight per unit area of 150 to 350 g/m. The material mixture contains an active material and an elastic polymer.

A battery having a collecting structure that can reduce internal resistance of the battery and a structure that allows easy manufacturing of the battery by the following processes is provided. An enlarged portion is formed near an opening end of a battery case and a supporting ledge is provided on the inner surface of the lower end of the enlarged portion. A collector of one polarity is bonded to an electrode plate group. A connection lead is bonded to the collector at one end and is bonded to a lower surface of a sealing member at the other end. An insulation gasket is mounted to a peripheral edge portion of the sealing member from a side opposite to the collector. The peripheral edge portion of the sealing member is supported by the supporting ledge with the insulation gasket interposed therebetween. Then, the peripheral edge portion of the sealing member is horizontally fastened and securely held via the insulation gasket by caulking the opening end of the battery case and performing a process for reducing the diameter of the enlarged portion.

The battery casehas a head portionhaving a circular cross section and a body portionhaving a substantially square cross section, one side of which is equal to or longer than the diameter of the circular cross section of the head portion.

After accommodating an electrode group in a battery case having a substantially square transverse cross section, making an opening head of the battery case into a cylindrical shape through compression molding, an annular groove is formed by pressing a groove-forming roller sideways against a side surface of the opening head while rotating the battery case with a pressing force being kept applied to the battery case in an axial direction from the opening portion side, or alternatively pressing the groove-forming roller against the opening head from the side surface thereof and concurrently displacing the groove-forming roller in a direction toward the opening portion of the battery case while rotating the battery case. After having an annular supporting portion that bulges inward of the battery case support an opening-sealing member, the opening-sealing member is fixed through caulking by bending the opening end portion of the battery case inward, whereby a battery is manufactured.

A nickel metal hydride storage battery having an excellent charging efficiency at high temperatures is provided by using a positive electrode comprising nickel hydroxide particles and at least one rare earth compound obtainable by treating a rare earth oxide with an aqueous alkaline solution and an oxidizing agent.
