A synthetic lubricating oil comprising an &#x3b1;-olefin (co)polymer defined by the features (i) to (v). Also, a lubricating oil composition including the above-mentioned synthetic lubricating oil and a low-viscosity base oil. The synthetic lubricating oil and the lubricating oil composition have high thermal oxidation stability and are excellent in viscosity index, low-temperature viscosity properties and shear stability.

The present invention intends to provide an ethylene/&agr;-olefin copolymer of specific structure, exhibiting excellent performance as a lubricant oil additive, capable of having various functional groups in high ratio, and serviceable as raw material for various solubilizing agents. The ethylene/&agr;-olefin copolymer of the present invention is composed of ethylene and an &agr;-olefin having 3 to 10 carbon atoms, and characterized by specific characteristics.

Ethylene/&agr;-olefin copolymer, method for producing the same, and use thereof

A composition prepared by adding as the sliding properties improving agent a small amount of ethylene-&agr;-olefin random copolymer having polar groups to engineering plastics including polyacetal, ABS, and polyamide is suitable for the manufacture of gears, rotary shafts and bearings by way of exploiting its molding processibility including excellent mold release properties, and at the same time is capable of enhancing its friction/wear resistance. As the sliding properties improving agent, an oxidation-modified material produced from ethylene-&agr;-olefin random copolymer or a graft-modified material prepared by graft-copolymerizing an ethylenic unsaturated monomer having carboxylic acid group, hydroxyl group or the like with ethylene-&agr;-olefin random copolymer is particularly preferable.

Molding resin composition

The present invention is directed towards a lubricating oil comprising a random copolymer of an &agr;-olefin/aromatic vinyl compound, wherein the copolymer has a viscosity falling within a specific range and comprises ethylene, an aromatic vinyl compound, and optionally an &agr;-olefin. The lubricating oil possesses excellent viscosity properties, thermal stability, oxidation stability, abrasion resistance, and compatibility with lubricating oil additives. The random copolymer having a different viscosity range is useful as a viscosity index improver and a compatibilizing agent for a lubricating oil. The invention also provides a lubricating oil composition comprising a base oil and the viscosity index improver or the compatibilizing agent. The invention further provides a fuel oil composition comprising a fuel oil fluidity improver based on the above random copolymer having a different viscosity range and a middle fraction fuel oil having a boiling point of 150 to 400&deg; C. The fuel oil composition prevents an increase in viscosity of the middle fraction fuel oil, lowers the clogging point and the flow point in a low-temperature filter, and inhibits the abrasion of a fuel jet nozzle.
