A controller and a control method for an internal combustion engine calculates ignition sample numbers of ignition corresponding torques corresponding to the respective ignition sample numbers of ignition timings, by using a torque characteristics function relationship in which a relationship between driving condition and output torque is preliminarily set; and calculates an ignition torque approximated curve approximating a relationship between the ignition sample numbers of the ignition timings and the ignition sample numbers of the ignition corresponding torques; and calculates a target ignition timing corresponding to the target torque.

A controller and a control method for an internal combustion engine detects a secondary voltage which is a voltage generated by the secondary coil, calculates a minimum value of secondary voltage during a discharge period, calculates a discharge plasma length based on the secondary voltage and the minimum value of secondary voltage, and calculates an in-cylinder flow speed based on a time change of the discharge plasma length and a Coulomb force.

A target injector valve opening period is calculated based on a target fuel injection amount, and an injector () is controlled by a current supply control unit () in accordance with an injector drive period acquired based on the target injector valve opening period. An operation status value detection unit detects two or more operation status values indicating an operation status of an internal combustion engine. A filtering processing unit applies filtering processing to the detected operation status values, and an operation status value difference calculation unit calculates the difference between the filter-processed operation status value and the corresponding non-filter-processed operation status value so as to calculate two or more operation status value differences. An operation status value difference normalization unit normalizes the two or more operation status value differences, based on predetermined reference values for the two or more operation status values, so as to calculate two or more normalized operation status value differences; and a transient correction unit corrects a control amount for controlling output of the internal combustion engine, based thereon, when the engine is in a transient-operation mode.

To provide a controller and a control method for an internal combustion engine capable of estimating a discharge plasma length accurately by easy method. Controller for internal combustion engine is provided with a secondary voltage detector that detects secondary voltage which is voltage generated by secondary coil, a secondary voltage minimum value calculator that calculates minimum value of secondary voltage during discharge period, and a discharge plasma length calculator that calculates length of the discharge plasma based on secondary voltage and minimum value of secondary voltage.

There is provided an internal combustion engine controller and a control method thereof that can accurately estimate an EGR rate even when the humidity of intake air (the atmospheric air) changes. In the internal combustion engine controller and the control method thereof, an EGR rate is calculated based on an inner-manifold water vapor partial pressure ratio calculated based on a manifold pressure, a manifold temperature, and a manifold humidity and an inner-intake-air water vapor partial pressure ratio calculated based on an intake-air pressure, an intake-air temperature, and an intake-air humidity.
