According to the present invention, provided is a carbonate- and magnesium-substituted hydroxyapatite having a particle size of 5 nm or more and 60 nm or less, wherein a portion of the calcium atoms in the hydroxyapatite are substituted with magnesium atoms and a portion of phosphate groups are substituted with carbonate groups.

A method for producing an implant whose surface is roughened by the sandblast method using shot material containing fluoroapatite. Fluoroapatite, compared to hydroxyapatite, has poor biocompatibility, but is superior in hardness. It also has a property of being dissolved in acid. As a result, by the sandblast method using shot material containing fluoroapatite, the surface roughening is performed quite effectively, and shot materials remained on the surface can easily be removed by acid.

A composite toothpaste product comprising a toothpaste containing a hydroxyapatite as a main active ingredient and another toothpaste containing a fluorine compound as a main active ingredient, which are enclosed with a container made of, for instance, a flexible tube but separated from each other by a partition united to the container. In the composite toothpaste product, the toothpastes are separated from each other with no contact when it is out of use, and are squeezed out of the container, when in use, in such a manner that the latter toothpaste is enclosed with the former. It is far more effective in removing bacterial plaque, improving tooth whiteness, and preventing dental caries than the conventional toothpaste products containing only either a hydroxyapatite or a fluorine compound.

A transcutaneously implantable element in which at least a portion thereof in contact with the cutaneous tissue of a living body is composed of a ceramic material comprising, as the main raw material, at least one member selected from the group consisting of hydroxyapatite, tricalcium phosphate, and tetracalcium phosphate, and which comprises (a) an electrically conductive member for electrically connecting the interior and exterior of the living body to each other or (b) a through hole for mechanically connecting the interior and exterior of the living body to each other. This transcutaneously element can be semipermanently and safely used in a living body without causing any undesirable bacterial infection, bleeding, and background noise.

Apatite containing immobilized glucanase for decomposition of polysaccharies associated with dental carries is prepared by adding dropwise glutaraldehyde to an aqueous solution in which glucanase, protein and apatite are present in a mixed state. The protein in preferably lysozyme.

An artificial dental root comprised of a particulate or powdered form of synthetic hydroxyapatite or calcined or sintered synthetic hydroxyapatite or a mixture thereof and an organic matrix, the surface area of said artificial dental root to be brought into contact with a bone being composed of both a phase of said hydroxyapatite and a phase of said organic matrix. The artificial dental root is prepared by blending said hydroxyapatite with said organic matrix and molding the blend. The artificial dental root has moderate affinity for a bone and high mechanical strength.

Process for preparing an artificial dental root

A dentifrice composition containing synthetic hydroxyapatite powder preferably in an amount of from 5 to 60% by weight and being slightly or weakly acidic preferably having a pH of from 4 to 6.9. The dentifrice composition is very effective in eliminating plaque from tooth surfaces and also has a high fortifying and remineralizing effect on the tooth surfaces.

Dentifrice compositions

A dentifrice composition containing synthetic hydroxyapatite powder which is neutral or weakly alkaline or contains 0.1 to 20% by weight of NaCl and/or KCl and 0.003 to 3% by weight of MgCl.sub.2. The dentifrice composition is very effective in fortifying a surface of a tooth, promoting remineralization of the surface of the tooth and eliminating plaque from the tooth.

Disclosed is a composite implant material comprising a sintered apatite material and a thermoplastic or thermosetting resin. Said composite material is prepared by forming a sintered apatite material and filling or impregnating a thermoplastic or thermosetting resin into the pores or holes of the sintered apatite material, which have been formed during the formation of said sintered material or perforated after the formation thereof. Said composite implant material has controlled compatibility to bone as well as excellent physical strength.

Disclosed is an orthopedic and dental implant ceramic composition comprising hydroxyapatite and whitlockite. Said composition is prepared by blending 50 to 99.5% by weight of a crystalline hydroxyapatite and 0.5 to 50% by weight of whitlockite, and then, sintering the blend at a temperature of 900.degree. to 1,400.degree. C. Said crystalline hydroxyapatite is prepared by the solid phase reaction wherein a mixture of a calcium phosphate, having a Ca/P ratio of 1.5 to 1.67 by mole, and a stoichiometric amount or more of a calcium compound is heated at a temperature of 500.degree. to 1,000.degree. C. Said calcium compound is at least one compound selected from the group consisting of CaCO.sub.3, CaO, Ca(OH).sub.2, CaF.sub.2, Ca(COO).sub.2, Ca(NO.sub.3).sub.2 and CaCl.sub.2.
