In accordance with the present invention, there are provided a gene encoding the promoter region of a protein p51 which is capable of inducing cell death, and a gene encoding the 5'-untranslated region of p51. These genes are useful in diagnosing and treating diseases including cancer caused by abnormal regulation of cell propagation. Furthermore, in accordance with the present invention, there are provided the antisense DNAs and the antisense RNAs of these genes, nucleic acid probes comprising parts or all of these genes, methods of detecting the above genes of the present invention or analogous genes using the nucleic acid probes, transformants in which the above gene of the present invention has been introduced, and methods of screening drugs using them. These genes are also useful in diagnosing and treating diseases including cancer, etc.

An imaging method for spatial distributions of concentrations of absorbers distributed in an object including a radiation step of applying pulsating or continuous light radiated from predetermined incident positions with predetermined wavelengths to the object in the form of a scattering medium containing the absorbers, and a detection step of detecting intensities of light passing through the object at predetermined detection positions. The imaging method also includes a step of finding a plurality photon paths for a plurality of pairs of the incident and detected positions of a model with similar dimensions to the object but without absorbers starting at the incident positions and ending at the detected positions, a step of finding averaged photon-path lengths of the photon paths starting at the incident positions and ending at the detection positions in the model by simulation, a step of finding spatial distributions of absorber concentrations from the averaged photon-path lengths, radiated intensities of the radiated light applied to the object, detected intensities of light detected at the detection positions and optical constants of the absorbers for the radiated light applied to the object, and a step of displaying the spatial distributions of the absorber concentrations.

A projection detecting apparatus for use in a third generation X-ray computer tomography includes an X-ray source and a detector array both mounted on a rotatable gantry for detecting X-ray projections of an object under inspection sequentially at a plurality of angles of the gantry, respectively. The detector array is formed by disposing consecutively a plurality of detector element blocks each constituted by a photodiode array and a scintillator array laminated together. The element blocks are so disposed as to be asymmetric to the center line of a fan-like radiation beam which line extends through the position of the X-ray source and the center of rotation of the gantry.

Radiation detector and manufacturing process thereof

In a radiation detector, scintillation material flouoresces and the produced light is converted to electrical energy in an adjacent converter, separators are provided in spaces between the adjacent scintillators and converters. The separators may have a greater length than the adjacent scintillators, so that they will extend beyond to reduce cross-talk. The separators can extend toward the source of radiation for a height substantially greater than, and particularly five times, the height of the spaces between the adjacent scintillators to prevent X-ray scattering and function as a collimator. Optically opaque adhesive may be provided on the opposite ends of separators and pairs of scintillators and collimators, to prevent cross-talk.

A radiation detector comprises a scintillator capable of emitting light by radiation and a photodetector for detecting the light emitted from the scintillator, the scintillator being composed of a sintered body prepared by sintering rare earth oxysulfide as a body starting material containing a densification additive by hot isostactic pressing. In an ionization chamber detector of the type in which a plurality of flat anode and cathode electrodes are alternately arranged in a predetermined gaseous medium, this invention provides a method of producing an ionization chamber detector which is characterized in that a plurality of ditches having a width a little bit greater than the thickness of the electrodes are formed on the inner surfaces of a pair of insulators disposed in the spaced-apart relation for supporting and fixing the anode and cathode electrodes, an adhesive is applied in advance temporarily in a rectangular form to both or one surface of each electrode at those positions which are set back by a distance corresponding to the thickness of the electrodes from both edge portions, another adhesive having a low viscosity is charged from the end portions of the ditches into the gaps between the electrodes and the ditch walls after the electrodes are inserted into the ditches, and the tentative adhesive and the adhesive having a low viscosity are then cured integrally in order to firmly bond and fix the electrodes into the ditches. This method can keep the distance between the electrodes highly accurate and can bond and fix reliably and stably the electrodes into the ditches.

Method of producing ionization chamber detector

A multi-cell radiation detector constructed such that a first group of electrodes to which is applied high voltage and a second group of electrodes to which are connected signal leads are alternately arranged inside a vessel containing ionizable gas enclosed therein. The first group electrodes are provided with terminals to which are connected leads for introducing high voltage from the exterior, while the second group electrodes are provided with terminals to which are connected leads for leading out signal outputs to the exterior. These leads and terminals are all disposed at positions offset from traveling path of the radiation so as to reduce the volume of the space under the weak electric field behind the electrode section.
