According to one embodiment, an image forming apparatus includes a plurality of process units, a transferring member, a sensor, and a processor. The plurality of process units include a photosensitive drum, an electric charger which charges the photosensitive drum, an exposing device which includes a plurality of light emitting element rows in a sub-scanning direction configured by the plurality of light emitting elements, and irradiates the photosensitive drum to form a latent image, and a developing device which attaches toner to the latent image to form a toner image. The transferring member receives the toner image from the photosensitive drum. The sensor detects the toner image transferred to the transferring member. The processor calculates a skew deviation amount based on the detection result of the sensor, and controls turning on and off the light emitting element based on a central tendency and the skew deviation amount.

In an exposure section of an image forming apparatus, a plurality of light emitting elements is divided into a plurality of blocks, and the plurality of the light emitting elements belonging to the same block is driven by one driving circuit. A toner adhesion sensor acquires density information of the toner images transferred onto a surface of the transfer belt of an image forming section. A controller controls the exposure section and the image forming section to form a dedicated pattern containing toner images corresponding to the plurality of the light emitting elements on the surface of the transfer belt, and diagnose the plurality of light emitting elements and other failure occurrence locations in the image forming apparatus from the density information of the toner images corresponding to the plurality of the light emitting elements in the dedicated pattern, which is acquired by the toner adhesion sensor.

An image forming apparatus includes a fixing device configured to include a pressure section and a heating section for heating an image receiving medium and to execute a fixing processing for fixing an image formed on the image receiving medium with a decolorable color material at a fixing temperature or an erasure processing for erasing an image at a decoloring temperature, a reading section configured to be arranged at the upstream side of the fixing device in the conveyance direction of the image receiving medium to read an identifier indicating whether or not the color material of the image formed on the image receiving medium can be decolorized, and a control section configured to control the execution of the erasure processing of the image on the image receiving medium with the fixing device according to a result of reading of the identifier with the reading section.
