A camera comprises a photographing data memory for storing data determined for each photographing at the time of photographing, a setting memory for determining whether to store the photographing data or not, a remaining memory capacity discriminator for outputting a first signal when a memory area to store the photographing data is present and outputting a second signal when the memory area to store the photographing data is exhausted. When the second signal is outputted, an alarm is displayed or a release operation is inhibited. In accordance with another aspect, the camera may comprise an inhibit circuit for comparing a memory capacity necessary to store the photographing data and a film end mark with a remaining memory capacity and inhibiting the storing of the photographing data when the remaining memory capacity is smaller than the required memory capacity. In accordance with another aspect, the camera may comprise an inhibit circuit to inhibit the updating of the setting of the type of the photographing data to be stored when a film loaded in the camera is in the course of photographing.

A camera including a battery check device, having a plurality of battery check levels, to inactivate auxiliary devices of the camera according to a detected battery voltage level, and to modify the battery check level depending on the auxiliary devices used for taking photographs. The remaining capacity of the battery is detected and compared with the plurality of battery check levels and the activation of the plurality of devices is prohibited in a specified order, for example, in order of lower priority, or in order of larger power consumption, as the detected value of the remaining battery capacity decreases. The battery check level can be modified based on the auxiliary devices which are inactivated by an operator. A photographic operation can be continued without missing a shutter opportunity as long as a sufficient battery capacity remains to activate the devices necessary for taking photographs.

A motion compensation camera having a camera body and a lens which is attachable to and removable from the camera body, such that the camera is able to compensate for blurring of a photographic image on an image plane resulting from motion or vibration of the camera body. The camera body has a main control unit which controls a series of camera operations. The lens either (a) determines whether it is possible to compensate for the blurring of the photographic image and transmits those results to the main control unit and controls the motion compensation operation or (b) determines whether the motion compensation operation is in progress and transmits signals which indicate this condition to the main control unit. If the lens side control unit determines that motion compensation is not possible, the main control unit controls the display unit to that effect or performs control, such as increasing the shutter speed. If the lens side control unit determines that motion compensation is in progress, the main control unit controls the display unit indicating this condition or performs controls such as setting a battery check voltage to a low level.

A camera with a visual line position detection device is capable of shortening the time required for auto focus detection and capable of more accurate selection of the focus detection point. The camera includes a focus detection device to output the results of distance measurements at a plurality of points where focus detection is possible and to detect focus for one of these points. A liquid crystal display device displays on a screen specified symbols overlapping the subject image on the positions corresponding to each of the points. A microprocessor accepts the results of the distance measurements from the focus detection system and selects one of the points based on the photographer visual line position as the point for focus detection among all the points whose distances are measured and on which focus detection is possible, excluding the points with an infinite focus distance.

The operating mode contents of a camera can easily be set by the visual alignment action of the photographer and by manual operation. In a first embodiment, a camera is equipped with a visual line position detection device that detects the position of the visual line of the photographer, a mode contents setting device that sets the contents of the operating modes, and a control device that, when it is determined from the output of the visual line position detection device that the photographer is aligning his vision on a predetermined area, changes the camera mode of the mode contents setting device. In a second embodiment, it is possible to quickly switch the camera mode that is the object of manual operation to the object of the visual alignment operation. It is then possible to change the contents of the mode through the visual alignment action, constituting the manual operation in the second embodiment. A selection device is started through the operation of an operation device, such as a mode switching device, and accomplishes a process wherein the camera mode set through manual operation using a mode setting device is set as the camera mode that is the object of contents changing through the action of visual alignment on numerical value setting areas.

A photometer for a camera that performs multi-area photometry and displays the exposure deviation to the photographer. The photometer includes a light measuring device with a plurality of photometric elements that perform photometry at a plurality of areas within the photographic field. A photometric value determining section calculates an effective photometric value using a weighted addition of each photometric value according to the given photometric mode. A standard value determining section calculates a reference photometric value using a predetermined, specified weighted addition of each photometric value. A deviation determining section calculates the deviation in the logarithmic values of the effective photometric value and the reference photometric value. A display device displays the deviation calculated by the deviation determining section.
