Provided is a catalyst block for cleaning exhaust gas, having: a square-shaped honeycomb core provided with first-fourth outside surfaces; a first plate attached to the first outside surface; a second plate attached to the second outside surface; and an exterior frame disposed along the outer periphery of the firm and solid honeycomb core formed from the honeycomb core, the first plate and the second plate, the exterior frame being provided with a recessed part that at least encases the first plate, the second plate, the third outside surface and the fourth outside surface. In the catalyst block, a catalyst is supported in the honeycomb core, the first plate and the second plate, and the catalyst is not supported in the exterior frame.

This invention provides a black low thermal expansion high specific rigidity ceramic sintered body having a black tone, manifesting very small thermal expansion at room temperature and abounding in rigidity and specific rigidity, and a method for the production thereof. The black low thermal expansion high specific rigidity ceramic sintered body is characterized by having a chemical composition comprising 8.0&#x2013;17.2 mass % of MgO, 22.0&#x2013;38.0 mass % of AlO, 49.5&#x2013;65.0 mass % of SiO, a total of 0.1&#x2013;2 mass % of one or more transition elements as reduced to oxides, and 0&#x2013;2.5 mass % of LiO, and having the mass ratios satisfy the relationships of (SiO&#x2212;8&#xd7;LiO)/MgO&#x2267;3.0 and (SiO&#x2212;8&#xd7;LiO)/AlO&#x2267;1.2. The method for the production of a black low thermal expansion high specific rigidity ceramic sintered body of this invention is characterized by forming the sintered body in an atmosphere of a non-oxidizing gas at a temperature in the range of 1200&#x2013;1500&#xb0; C.

The low thermal expansion and high rigidity ceramic sintered body of this invention is characterized by assuming as a crystal structure a hexagonal close-packed structure and substantially comprising solid solution crystal grains represented by the formula: Mg Li Fe Al Si O (wherein a is in the range of 1.8 to 1.9, b is in the range of 0.1 to 0.3, c is in the range of 0 to 0.2, d is in the range of 3.9 to 4.1, e is in the range of 6.0 to 7.0, and f is in the range of 19 to 23). It is further characterized by the solid solution crystal grains having lattice constants in the ranges, a in the range of 9.774 to 9.804 &angst; and c in the range of 9.286 to 9.330 &angst;, the relative density of the sintered body being of not less than 98%.
