A sheet bar having a thickness of 20 to 50 mm, as continuously cast by a sheet bar caster, is passed as it is through a first sheet bar twister and is then wound in an up-end state into an up-end sheet bar coil. Then, this up-end sheet bar coil is rewound, passed through a second sheet bar twister, finish-rolled and wound into a hot coil. As compared with the slabbing&mdash;high draft rolling process of the prior art, the invention is advantageous in that it can improve the quality, production yield and production efficiency and can reduce the cost for an apparatus such as the cost for its construction and maintenance.

A box annealing furnace for annealing a metal sheet includes an oxygen removal unit for removing oxygen from the atmosphere in a box annealing furnace, with a gas circulation system for withdrawing atmosphere from the box annealing furnace during annealing, treating the gas, and for refeeding the deoxidized gas to the box annealing furnace. The box annealing furnace may also include a moisture removal unit for removing moisture from the gas. The oxygen removal unit and the moisture removal unit can reliably remove oxygen and moisture from the gas and suppress the formation, during annealing, of oxide film on a ferrous metal sheet.

An earthquake resistant structure for mounting on a base having a limited available surface has an upper bearing and a lower bearing compactly arranged, one with a convex surface and the other with a concave surface, in contact with each other to transmit load between a bridge and a supporting pier, for example, the bearings being slidable relative to each other; a pin is provided for fixing the upper and lower bearings and an extraction preventing member prevents the bearings from separating from each other; a seal member is disposed between the upper bearing and the lower bearing; and a dust prevention and anti-corrosion cover are provided to assure long-time use.
