In one embodiment, a writing instrument refill includes a first portion having flexibility, and a second portion having a cross-sectional area larger than a cross-sectional area of the first portion, wherein the center of figure of the cross section of the first portion is offset from the center of the figure of the cross section of the second portion, the first portion and the second portion are formed integrally, and a part of the first portion has an outer diameter smaller than an outer diameter of the other part of the first portion.

A mechanical pencil includes a writing lead, a chuck unit for chucking the writing lead, and a cushion spring configured to elastically support the chuck unit in such a manner that the chuck unit is retractable with a writing pressure. An output of the cushion spring, in response to a cushion stroke, is non-linear, and a slope of a spring constant, in a region where the cushion stroke is relatively small, is smaller than a slope of a spring constant in a region where the cushion stroke is relatively large.

A mechanical pencil includes a writing lead, a chuck that chucks the writing lead and feeds the writing lead forward, and a shaft tube for housing the writing lead and the chuck. When a click operation for feeding the chuck forward is performed, a jet stream flowing forward is generated inside the shaft tube.

A hand tool includes an outer barrel, an inner barrel housed in the outer barrel, and a rear barrel assembled to the outer barrel and the inner barrel. A writing instrument according to an embodiment of the invention including, a chuck that chucks a writing lead, wherein the chuck includes a first chuck pawl which comes into point contact or line contact with the writing lead to press the writing lead so as to apply first contact stress to the writing lead; and a second chuck pawl which presses the writing lead so as to apply, to the writing lead, second contact stress that is lower than the first contact stress, and the first contact stress is configured such that, when a prescribed impact is applied to the writing lead, a contact portion of the writing lead subjected to the first contact stress fractures and absorbs the prescribed impact.

A stick-shaped material propelling container which comprises a barrel having a spiral groove formed in its inner peripheral surface, a guide tube having slits and inserted in the barrel so as to be rotatable relative to the barrel and axially unmovable, and a stick-shaped material holding member provided with side plates and protrusions and slidably inserted in the tube with the protrusions being engaged with the grooves through the slits. The groove has a structure for causing rear end portions of the side plates to come closer to each other and for causing tip end portions of the side plates to be separated radially outward from each other according to the mutually approaching movements of the rear end portions of the side plates, when the protrusions are slid along a tip end portion of the groove according to relative rotation of the barrel and the tube.
