An electronic control unit is configured to, when the electronic control unit determines that any one of a first condition and a second condition is satisfied, preferentially execute lower limit speed ratio control. The first condition is a condition that, after the electronic control unit starts shift prohibition control, a wheel lock has occurred before a condition for cancelling the shift prohibition control is satisfied. The second condition is a condition that, after the electronic control unit starts the lower limit speed ratio control, a wheel spin has occurred before a condition for cancelling the lower limit speed ratio control is satisfied.

In a control apparatus for a powertrain that includes an automatic transmission, occurrence of slip in a one-way clutch is determined when one gear is formed if a first rotation member and a second rotation member of the one-way clutch rotate relatively. If slip in the one-way clutch is detected, it is determined whether the rotational speed difference between the first rotation member and the second rotation member has increased. If the rotational speed difference between the first rotation member and the second rotation member has increased when slip is detected in the one-way clutch, a control is executed to engage a predetermined frictional engagement element.

Hydraulic pressure supplied to a first brake and a second brake in a transmission is controlled during an upshift such that the second brake releases from an applied state, and the first brake applies from a released state. The hydraulic pressure supplied to the first brake is increased to a standby pressure. When a period of time has passed after the upshift starts, the output torque of a powertrain is increased. The standby pressure is corrected according to a decrease rate of an input shaft rotation speed of the transmission during an inertia phase of the upshift. An ECU executes a program that includes the step of setting the period of time from the start of the upshift until the output torque of the powertrain starts to increase, according to the standby pressure.
