The vehicle also including input and output shaft rotation speed detecting units and an output limiting unit that limits the output of the engine by comparing the deviation of the input and output shaft rotation speed to a predetermined rotation speed relationship range. A control system for an automatic transmission is provided with a manual shift mode capable of performing a shift command made by manual operation. While in the manual shift mode and during the operation of a downshift command generated by a shift lever, a manual shift control unit calculates a degree of power required by a driver that, for example, takes into consideration an operation intent of the driver and a road condition. A post-downshift shift speed is then determined in accordance with the degree of required power and downshifting performed. By performing only one downshift command through manual operation, downshifting in accordance with the degree of power required by the driver is performed. Downshifting to a shift speed desired by the driver can thus be promptly performed, without the operation becoming a burden.

A shift control apparatus of an automatic transmission of a motor vehicle to which torque is transmitted from an engine via a fluid coupling device is provided. In the automatic transmission including a plurality of hydraulically operated friction elements, a clutch-to-clutch downshift is carried out during coasting of the vehicle by releasing one of the friction elements and engaging another friction element. A controller of the shift control apparatus detects a difference between input and output rotation speeds of the fluid coupling device, and increases an engine speed by a controlled amount based on the difference between the input and output rotation speeds when the clutch-to-clutch downshift is carried out during coasting of the vehicle, so that the vehicle is brought into a minimal driving state in which the engine speed is slightly higher than the output rotation speed of the fluid coupling device.

A duty ratio for controlling an engagement force of a friction engagement device on the side of upshift engagement is corrected by an amount corresponding to an intermediate correction control value in the course of the shift. In addition, on a prerequisite condition that learning correction of a constant standby pressure control value at the start of the shift is converged, learning correction is performed for the intermediate correction control value according to a gradient of a turbine speed. Thus, a shift shock is prevented from occurring due to abrupt engagement of the friction engagement device and the like at the completion of the shift.

To prevent the neutral state from being formed in a change gear apparatus and allow the obtaining of an intended gear change appropriately during a servo malfunction. Hydraulic servos engage and disengage a plurality of friction engagement elements; a hydraulic pressure supply system supplies the hydraulic servo of a predetermined friction engagement element with hydraulic pressure; and an auxiliary hydraulic pressure supply systems supplies a predetermined hydraulic servo with another hydraulic pressure, in the case where the hydraulic pressure supply system is placed in a first unsupplied state where the hydraulic pressure supply system cannot supply the hydraulic servo of the predetermined friction engagement element with hydraulic pressure. The auxiliary hydraulic pressure supply system does not supply the predetermined hydraulic servo with the other hydraulic pressure, in the case that the hydraulic pressure supply system is placed in a second unsupplied state where the hydraulic pressure supply system does not supply the hydraulic servo of the predetermined friction engagement element with hydraulic pressure.

Apparatus for controlling a vehicle automatic transmission having a hydraulically operated frictional coupling device operable to effect a shifting action of the automatic transmission, a switching valve operable according to a shifting command to effect the shifting action, and a pressure regulating valve operable to control a pressure of a working fluid to be supplied to the frictional coupling device through the switching valve to effect the shifting action, the apparatus including (a) a fluid temperature detector operable to detect a temperature of the working fluid, and (b) a delaying device operable to delay a moment of initiation of an operation of the pressure regulating valve to control the pressure of the working fluid to be supplied to the frictional coupling device for effecting the shifting action, such that the moment of initiation is delayed depending upon the detected working fluid temperature, to reduce a shifting shock of the automatic transmission.

Further, the hydraulic control device has a plurality of solenoid valves for supplying the predetermined hydraulic pressure to the plurality of hydraulic servos and a shutoff valve, disposed between a hydraulic pressure source and one of the solenoid valves, for shutting off supply of hydraulic pressure to that one solenoid valve when hydraulic pressure to be supplied to the hydraulic servos selected in correspondence with the target gear ratio and hydraulic pressure to be supplied to the other hydraulic servos are generated.
