A dye-based ink includes a dye and a solvent. The dye-based ink has a high print quality on plain paper. The dye-based ink may have a print quality similar to pigment-based inks. This may be particularly relevant for black inks.

Ink-jet ink sets

Compositions and methods for ink-jet printing having increased slewing decap time and reduced clogging are disclosed and described. An ink-jet ink composition can include a colorant and a liquid vehicle having a surfactant. The surfactant can have a critical micelle concentration with respect to the ink-jet ink composition. In addition, the surfactant can be present in the ink-jet ink composition at a concentration from about 0.4 to about 0.95 times the critical micelle concentration. Further, the surfactant can also have an aromatic-containing portion. Using the ink-jet inks of the present invention during printing can allow for reduced clogging and increased stewing decap time during ink-jet printing on a variety of substrates with improved reliability, faster printing, and more efficient use of the ink.

Ink-jet inks having surfactants below the critical micelle concentration and associated methods

Disclosed is an ink composition that includes a colorant; a water-soluble organic solvent; and a penetrant, where the penetrant may be a hydroxylated pentane. Also disclosed is an ink composition that includes a penetrant that enables the ink composition to maintain a drop weight of at least about 4.5 ng at high operating frequencies of an ink drop generator of the ink-jet printer.

Dye-based ink compositions

The present invention is drawn to ink sets ink-jet imaging, including ink sets having six ink-jet inks. In one embodiment, the ink set can comprise a black ink including a first organic solvent system, a cyan ink including a second organic solvent system, a magenta ink including a third organic solvent system, and a yellow ink including a fourth organic solvent system. In this embodiment, at least two of the organic solvent systems are different. The first organic solvent system can include a first organic solvent and a second organic solvent. The second and third organic solvent systems can include the first organic solvent and a third organic solvent. The fourth organic solvent system can include the second organic solvent and a fourth organic solvent. These solvent systems, and others, can also be used to prepare various dye sets that are dye specific.

Ink sets for ink-jet ink imaging

The present invention is drawn to dye sets for formulating ink-jet inks, including ink sets having six ink-jet inks. In one embodiment, the dye set can comprise a yellow dye for formulating a yellow ink, a pair of magenta dyes for formulating a magenta ink and a pale magenta ink, a pair of cyan dyes for formulating a cyan ink and a pale cyan ink, and a black dye for formulating a black ink-jet ink. The pair of magenta dyes can be a transition metal-containing azo dye and a non-metallized dye. The pair of cyan dyes can be a first copper phthalocyanine dye and a second copper phthalocyanine dye that is different than the first copper phthalocyanine dye.

The inks provide excellent ink-jet prints having excellent imaging onto the media with sharp, smooth edge text print and overall print quality improvements. The aqueous inks each comprise an anionic colorant (CMYK), a short chain alcohol or diol and a cationic surfactant.

Various ink formulations utilizing particular magenta dyes have excellent printing characteristics with high chroma and good lightfastness on plain paper and minimal humid bleed and hue shift on special media. The magenta humid bleed shift has been greatly reduced, especially on photo glossy materials. A single dye may be used in comparison to blended dyes which have been used in the past.

Magenta ink formulation

In accordance with the invention inks suitable for use in ink-jet printers and method for using the same are provided. More particularly, inks comprising the present dye set exhibits excellent color performance and lightfastness across a range of media. Furthermore, the dye set enables good reliability in an environment having a relatively high concentration of precipitating agents. This reliability enables the use of precipitation bleed control mechanisms. More specifically, a specific dye set for formulating the yellow, magenta, and cyan inks is disclosed, comprising Acid Yellow 17 and a yellow dye according to Formula I; Acid Red 52 and a magenta dye according to Formula II; and Direct Blue 199 and Acid Blue 9; respectively.

Dye set for improved color quality for ink-jet printers

An ink-jet ink composition for ink-jet printing and a method using the same is disclosed, the ink composition comprising an aqueous liquid vehicle, at least one zwitterionic surfactant; and at least one amphiphilic dye, said at least one amphiphilic dye comprising a plurality of amphiphilic dye molecules, each of said amphiphilic dye molecules consisting essentially of a chromophore and at least one hydrophobic arm attached thereto, said at least amphiphilic dye being present in said ink-jet ink composition in an amount that is at least equal to its critical micelle concentration. The ink compositions of the present invention provide enhanced waterfastness and optical density.

Ink-jet inks for improved print quality

In accordance with the invention a set of dyes suitable for use in ink-jet inks and method for formulating the same are provided. The yellow ink of the present invention contains a yellow colorant having a CIELAB hue angle, h.degree., less than 90.degree. to provide a true representation of colors, particularly skin tone colors. More specifically, a specific dye set for formulating the yellow, cyan, and magenta inks is disclosed, comprising Yellow 104, Direct Blue 199, and Magenta 377 dyes, respectively. The Yellow 104, the Magenta 377, and the DB 199 dyes provide near photographic images having lightfast characteristics necessary to preserve the trueness of the inkjet images by (1) producing images having less light fade and (2) images that when they do fade, fade in a more uniform manner across the color set.
