A modem and a method for controlling the same. The modem includes a first interface interfacing with a subscriber terminal, a second interface interfacing with a switching system, a detection means detecting a communication connection status with the subscriber terminal and outputting a detection result signal, and a controller processing a data communication between the subscriber terminal and the switching system and controlling the second interface to stop the operations if a non-connection signal is inputted from the detection means. In the present invention, releasing a communication channel with the switching system when the subscriber terminal is in a non-connection status reduces unnecessary power consumption and lengthens the life span of an apparatus. Further, the operations of such subscriber modem can control unnecessary line occupation in a switching system for a plurality of subscriber modems, to reduce power consumption in the switching system and enhance system data processing speed.

Modem and a method for controlling the same

An asymmetric data transmission apparatus using asymmetric digital subscriber lines, which connects a high-speed data network to telephone subscriber lines in response to a demand of a subscriber, is provided. The apparatus contains subscriber line connectors which are connected to the telephone subscriber lines, which include activation sensors that receive activation signals from remote units via the subscriber lines, and which receive output signals from the remote units and output corresponding analog signals. Also, a particular subscriber line connector inputs a particular output signal from a particular remote unit via a particular telephone subscriber line and outputs a particular analog signal. The apparatus also contains subscriber modems which are connected to digital lines of the network, which modulate output digital signals transmitted from any the network via the digital lines into output analog signals, and which demodulate input analog signals into input digital signals and supply the input digital signals to the network. Also, a particular subscriber modem inputs a particular input analog signal and outputs a particular input digital signal. The apparatus also includes a connection circuit which selectively connects the particular subscriber modem to the particular subscriber line connector and which inputs the particular received analog signal and outputs the particular input analog signal.

Asymmetric data transmission apparatus using asymmetric digital subscriber lines, and subscriber line connection method therefor

A credit inquiry service system for inquiring about the credit standing of a check or credit card uses subscriber lines of a public communication network. The system includes credit inquiry terminals connected to the subscriber lines for generating and transmitting an inquiry request message requesting information regarding the credit standing of the check or credit card. The credit inquiry terminals also receive an inquiry result message corresponding to the inquiry request message via the subscriber lines. The system further includes a line multiplex device for one by one serially selecting the subscriber lines connected to the credit inquiry terminals, receiving the inquiry request message from one of the credit inquiry terminals connected to a selected subscriber line, and transmitting the inquiry result message corresponding to the inquiry request message to the corresponding credit inquiry terminal. A multiplexer is connected to a distributor of the public communication network to facilitate access of the subscriber lines, and to connect a selected subscriber line to the line multiplex device. A computer center receives the inquiry request message from the line multiplex device and transmits the inquiry request message to a card company's computer. The computer center then receives the inquiry result message indicating the credit standing of the check or credit card, and transmits the inquiry result message to the line multiplex device. The line multiplex device then transmits the inquiry result message back to the respective credit inquiry terminal via its corresponding subscriber line.
