When a first base station is serving a wireless client device (WCD), the first base station provides the WCD with a copy of the WCD context information that the first base station maintains for serving the WCD. When the WCD then experiences a radio-link failure and connects with the second base station, the WCD will forward the provided WCD context information to the second base station, for use by the second base station as a basis to serve the WCD. This process of transferring the context information through the WCD from the old base station to the new base station could help to avoid the need for the second base station to engage in direct context-transfer signaling with the first base station, which could be especially useful in a scenario where the base stations are unable to engage in that direct transfer.

Transfer of WCD service-context information through the WCD to facilitate transition of the WCD to a new serving base station

Embodiments disclosed herein describe systems, methods, and processing nodes for traffic management in wireless networks based on performing correlations between radio network attributes and wireless device attributes, and generating updated network parameters based on the correlation. Correlations between radio network attributes and wireless device attributes can yield commonalities or patterns based on a frequency band, a site, or a market. Based on the commonalities or patterns, network parameters such as cell reselection priority, allocation of resources, maximum traffic per frequency band, etc. can be calculated and deployed to various network elements such as control nodes, access nodes, wireless devices, etc. The deployment results in an optimal traffic distribution across each frequency band, such that the available spectrum is utilized efficiently and per-user throughput is maximized for all users of the wireless network.

Traffic management in wireless networks

A wireless service of a first type is scanned. A first station associated with the first type is selected. A first indicator of expected service conditions associated with the first station is received. Based on the first indicator, a wireless service of a second type is scanned. A second station associated with the second type is selected. A second indicator of expected service conditions associated with the second type is received. Based on the first indicator and the second indicator, one of the first type and second type is selected to receive wireless service.

Reallocation of resources for dual-mode wireless devices

A system and methodology for network planning in which a software based tool provides network engineers with the capability to more precisely plan for traffic loading within the network on a cell site by cell site basis. Thus for each cell site, variations in geographic location, device mix, historical usage patterns and other factors are taken into account to allow for more accurate network planning and for more efficient use of capital. Cell sites with a higher traffic profile based upon historic device mix and usage patterns will be associated with lower OSF values thus enhancing the user experience for a device user in communication with that cell site. On the other hand, for cell sites with a lesser traffic profile, a higher OSF value is ascribed thus allowing for capital to be deployed elsewhere while still maintaining a positive user experience for users relying on that cell site.

Traffic planning in a network using a variable oversubscription factor

What is disclosed is a method of coordinating a handoff of a wireless communication device from a first access node to a second access node. The method includes monitoring a signal strength level at the wireless communication device for wireless communications transferred from each of the first access node and the second access node. The method also includes determining a loading factor of the first access node, a loading factor of the second access node, a mobility factor of the wireless communication device, and an application type of user communications between the wireless communication device and the first access node, and processing the loading factor of the first access node, the loading factor of the second access node, the mobility factor, and the application type to determine a handoff threshold. The method also includes coordinating the handoff of the wireless communication device from the first access node to the second access node based on the handoff threshold, wherein the handoff is initiated when a difference between the signal strength levels reaches the handoff threshold.

Wireless device handoff based upon dynamic factors

Data is transmitted from a first base station using a first sub-channel at a first power level. An indication that a first wireless device is in a potential interference location is received. The first wireless device is receiving data from a second base station. Data is transmitted from the first base station using the first sub-channel at a second power level when a second wireless device receiving data from the first base station on the first sub-channel is associated with an indicator of lower priority. The second power level is lower than the first power level.

Interference mitigation

Methods and systems for reducing the latency of instant communication session establishment are presented. According to various preferred embodiments, a RAN, may receive a setup request message via a packet-switched network. The RAN may determine, from a quality of service (QOS) indication contained in the setup request message, that the setup request message is requesting establishment of a instant communication session. The RAN may further determine an intended destination wireless communication device (WCD) for the setup request message. Based on the QOS indication and/or a profile indicating the destination WCD's capabilities, the RAN may pre-allocate resources for the instant communication session in parallel to paging the destination WCD. In this way, the latencies associated with these procedures are overlapped, thus reducing the overall latency of instant communication session establishment.

Methods and systems for improving session establishment with wireless communication devices

Systems, methods, and software are provided to manage a handover of a mobile communication device from a source base station to a target base station. In an embodiment, a method comprises exchanging wireless communications between a plurality of mobile communication devices and a first base station system, processing the communications to determine a plurality of mobility profiles associated with the plurality of mobile communication devices served by the first base station system. A handover request to handover a mobile communication device from a second base station system to the first base station system is received. The plurality of mobility profiles are processed to select a candidate mobile communication device from the plurality of mobile communication devices. A handover of the candidate mobile communication device is initiated from the first base station system to a target base station system.

Optimizing handovers in a communication network

Using a first station, a wireless device is communicated with via a first type of wireless service. Resources associated with the wireless device are determined they should be re-allocated. A command and an indicator that result in the wireless device scanning for a second type of wireless service are sent to the wireless device.

A wireless communication system comprises a mode transition control system. The mode transition control system comprises a communication interface and a processing system. The communication interface is configured to receive first information for a first user. The processing system is configured to process the first information and select a first mode transition sequence for the first user, wherein the first mode transition sequence comprises an active mode to sleep mode to idle mode transition, and an idle mode to sleep mode to active mode transition. The communication interface is configured to receive second information for a second user. The processing system is configured to process the second information and select a second mode transition sequence for the second user, wherein the second mode transition sequence comprises an active mode to sleep mode transition, and a sleep mode to active mode transition. The communication interface is configured to receive third information for a third user. The processing system is configured to process the third information and select a third mode transition sequence for the third user, wherein the third mode transition sequence comprises an active mode to idle mode transition, and an idle mode to active mode transition. The communication interface is configured to transfer the first mode transition sequence to the first user for use by the first user, transfer the second mode transition sequence to the second user for use by the second user, and transfer the third mode transition sequence to the third user for use by the third user.
